The Research Lab Manager provides complex scientific and technical leadership in determining priorities and the plan, design and execution of protocols ensuring that the program meets specified objectives. The Manager plans, develops and implements new experiments and protocols to support research studies and maximize/extend lab capabilities. Sets-up and troubleshoots custom protocols and conducts independent research techniques, procedures and experiments. The Manager co-authors scientific papers for presentation and publication. May manage lab employees, and develop and administer budgets, grants, and/or administrative procedures. The Manager ensures adherence to all associated rules and regulations. This position requires taking a call rotation to work on weekends if stat specimens are received in the laboratory and being available to respond to freezer emergencies.
Organizes and plans testing in conjunction with lab director;
Establishes control methods, techniques and procedures as required for specific projects and research studies;
Guides lab staff in conducting research;
Using an expert level of skill, completes the following activities:
DNA, RNA, Protein isolation, purification and expression
Southern, Northern, Western blotting
Cloning, mapping and sequencing of DNA
Recombinant virus production and purification
Cell culture, cell isolation
Tissue fixation/processing: embedding, preparation of blocks and sectioning, staining
ELISA, Elispot assay
Antibody production and purification
Prepares results and co-authors scientific papers for presentation and publication;
Identifies and/or acquires new equipment and/or facilities;
Acts as liaison between sponsoring agencies, collaborating organizations and/or other research and/or educational institutions;
Ensures adherence to all current local, state, and federal regulatory requirements, laws and research protocols, and oversees all required filings, approvals, documentation and reports.
Negotiates prices and specifications with vendors;
Purchases supplies, materials, equipment and services;
Ensures appropriate allocation and compliance.
Trains, directs, assigns duties to and may supervise lab EEs, students, residents and/or fellows.
Provides instruction to lab users on technically complex procedures, equipment and instruments;
Typically manages a lab budget of $2,000,000+; 2,500+ nasf of space and supervises 12+ lab members;
Performs other duties as required or assigned.
A bachelor’s degree in a basic science and 8 years’ experience; or an MS in a basic science and 6 years’ experience; or 10 years practical lab/bench experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired;
Supervisory or project management experience required;
Laboratory skills specifically relating to histocompatibility testing and data analysis and reporting;
Excellent communication, organizational, leadership and interpersonal skills.
CHT or CHS certification and supervisory experience;
Knowledge of Histocompatibility and Transplant Immunology.
