The primary purpose of this position is to carry out the activities of police patrol on the University campus. This position patrols assigned areas for response to complaints or calls and for detection of violations of those observed committing offenses, investigating violation or complaints in order to assess and handle cases, responsibility for the collection and preservation of evidence and chain of custody and testifying in the court proceedings. Work in this class excludes property security, escort service and parking control except as incidental assignments. Work is performed under general supervision, guided by applicable laws, regulations and policy, and reviewed through job effectiveness, oral and written reports.
Primary Function of Organizational Unit:
The primary purpose of this unit is to provide an effective and efficient link between the University Community and the University Police Department's operations and services 24 hours a day, 365 days per year. The Department of Police and Public Safety maintains the responsibility of providing a safe and secure community for the students, faculty, staff and visitors. All University Police Officers are sworn full[time police officers who are state certified by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission and must receive Basic Law Enforcement Training before being sworn as Police Officers. NC A&T State University Police Officers have complete police authority to enforce local, state and federal laws on all property owned or leased by the University and on streets that run through, are adjacent to, or border the campus.

High school diploma or equivalency. Certification as a Law Enforcement Officer in accordance with the provisions of the North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission or the ability to achieve certification within one year of employment. Additional Education and Experience will be necessary for progressive steps (Journey and Advanced).
Demonstrated competencies associated with the following duties: effective performance of general patrol duties (emergency response, medical, traffic, and service); the ability to perform effective investigations; an understanding of crime prevention and community policing in a university environment; the ability to effectively use and maintain law enforcement equipment.
Completion of a Basic Law Enforcement Training school or a certification that is equivalent to NC training and standards commission.
