Earned doctorate; evidence of active and distinguished scholarship worthy of appointment to the rank of full professor in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHSS); strong human relations and communication skills; leadership commitment to diversity and inclusion; administrative service that promotes scholarly achievement and excellence in teaching and student success; record of high-quality teaching and an understanding of teacher preparation programs within the disciplines of CHSS; a substantial record of administration at the department level and/or university level that demonstrates creative and collaborative leadership and the ability to plan strategically as the college advocate; professional managerial skills, including data-informed processes, and the willingness to delegate responsibility; and an understanding of the disciplines which comprise the college and current concerns in higher education.
Nature & Purpose of Position/Usual Duties:
The dean is expected to provide innovative and responsible leadership of faculty in the pursuit of excellence in research, teaching, and service, and is responsible for directing and promoting the development, policies, and operations of all undergraduate and graduate programs within CHSS. A successful candidate should have the ability to listen and to build an environment of trust, transparency, and open debate in decision-making. In addition, the candidate must utilize and apply data to develop plans to achieve goals. The dean should be an outspoken advocate for the humanities and social sciences and should support and nurture the teacher-scholar model. The dean should foster a sense of intellectual community within the college, across departments, among faculty, and with the students. The dean should engage faculty, staff, and students, in developing a shared plan for the future of the college and defining its role in the broader mission of SHSU.
Primary Responsibilities (Staff Positions Only):
Academic leadership: overseeing faculty recruitment and retention; translating outcomes and goals into meaningful work assignments and professional development; actively encouraging the development of proposals for grant funds and contracts for the implementation of funded projects; planning and implementing curricula and schedules; advising on faculty promotions, retentions, dismissals, and salaries; and participating in on-going professional development programs relevant to faculty and staff.
Administrative leadership: representing the college to all other intra-university academic and non-academic administrative areas; participating in the development of academic policies through membership on university level committees; administrating agreements entered into between the university and other agencies; ensuring college compliance with pertinent federal, state, and university policies, including but not limited to the affirmative action and equal employment opportunity policies; and participating in on-going professional development programs relevant to administrative leadership; promoting staff professional development to enhance unit services; and providing leadership to promote career readiness for students across all majors within the college.
Financial leadership and advancement: allocating and supervising disbursement of funds; participating in on-going professional development programs relevant to budget administration; coordinating and supporting CHSS alumni groups, donors, and community stakeholders.
