Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Instrument Specialist for The Human Genetics Institute. The position is under the supervision of senior robotics personnel and reports to the Robotics Manager, RUCDR. This position repairs, maintains and troubleshoots robotic instrumentation in the Rutgers University Cell and DNA Repository (RUCDR) Laboratories. The instrument Specialist supports many users, primarily the Nucleic Acid Services Analysis (NASA) Lab & Plasma Fractionation Lab.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
Troubleshoots and problem solves inoperative RUCDR instruments and equipment in a timely manner to return them to service quickly.
Reliably communicates with users, vendors and senior robotics staff about the plans, progress and expectations for returning inoperable instruments and equipment to availability.
Maintains RUCDR instruments and equipment to ensure that all instruments are operating at optimal level and configured to meet needs of the various lab teams at RUCDR.
Independently and proactively monitors, recognizes and prioritizes Lab work loads in order to schedule in advance, vendor service contract maintenance with users of instruments and equipment to optimize efficiency and avoid conflicts over instrument access.
Maintains stocks of parts and consumables where appropriate to minimize down time.
Minimum Education and Experience:
Bachelor's degree in a biological science or an allied field.
A minimum of two (2) years of programming one of which includes using Hamilton Venus.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Experience with robotics repair, good communication and personal skills.
Work ethic that embraces independent activities.
Superior customer service skills.
Superior troubleshooting and critical thinking skills.
Proactive in solving simple to advanced issues while maintaining an exceptional level of customer service skills.
Experience maintaining and repairing Hamilton, Qiagen and/or Biomek instrumentation are preferred.
Experience in liquid handling programming is a plus.
Operates and maintains RUCDR instruments, including: Hamilton STARs, chemagicSTARs, Hamilton easyBloods, Beckman Coulter Biomek Robots, Qiagen QiaSymphony, PerkinElmer 360s and numerous volume checking, tube sorting and analytic instruments.
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
It may be required to lift up to 40lbs occasionally to assist in relocation of small instrumentation or analytical devices. Irregular work hours will occasionally be required. An example is when a user of the instrument has problems toward the end of the working day, the Instrument Specialist must be able to stay later than expected and help the user.
Occasional Weekend and Holiday hours will be required outside of normal working hours.
