The mission of the UCSD TRIO Outreach Program is to increase the post secondary matriculation of low income, first generation high school students. Approximately 950 San Diego County students are served from five U.S. Department of Education grants.
Uses skills as a seasoned, experienced training and development professional to resolve a wide range of training issues and needs assessments. Develops new training programs and works on complex training courses of diverse scope. Demonstrates good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for delivering training and development programs. Trainers develop curriculum for specific academic subject areas as outlined in the TRIO federal grant, including math (basic algebra - advanced calculus), composition and literature, science with a lab or foreign language. Provide classroom academic enrichment to high school youth and in-class tutor training.
Trainers are expected to provide professional development in a 1-1 setting with tutors on a weekly basis. Trainers use experience working in diverse communities with low income, first-generation college-bound youth, to develop training modules for young professionals to gain and develop tutoring skills as part of the Upward Bound summer program. Trainers must be proficient in high school level science, including biology, chemistry and physics and available to offer STEM academic enrichment to high school students from all grade levels (9th - 12th). Trainers must choose one or more of the following programs.
For all program dates below, Trainers must attend a mandatory paid training:
Monday - Friday, June 15th - June 19th at UC San Diego.
Program 1: (2 weeks) Location: UC San Diego Dates: June 29th - July 9th, Mon - Thurs Time: 10:30am - 12pm
Program 2: (2 weeks) Location: UCSD Dates: July 13th - July 23rd, Mon - Thurs Time: 9am - 10:30am
Program 3: (1 week) Location: UCSD Dates: July 13th - July 17th, Mon - Friday Time: 9am - 12pm
Experience and extensive knowledge of the teaching profession in one of the following high school level subject areas: Math (basic algebra – advanced calculus), Composition and Literature, Science with a lab component, or Foreign Language. Ability to interpret education materials and the most current research regarding classroom practice and educational standards.
Demonstrated experience working with a broad range of educational professionals. Ability to work collegially with program administrators and other instructors.
Proven experience and thorough knowledge of training and development, performance management and workplace learning. Ability to apply knowledge to achieve successful organizational outcomes.
Thorough knowledge of functional area and understands how work may impact other areas. Ability to work within a fast paced environment, apply federal regulations to scope of work as trainer and instructor; act as a leader within the program staff.
Strong analytical skills to conduct analysis and develop recommendations, demonstrating organization and problem-solving skills. Strong verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills and strong presentation skills.
Demonstrated ability to develop professional development curriculum for tutor training. Skill in small group and individualized instruction.
Basic knowledge working with a diverse student population, and sensitivity to culture, race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation and socio-economic status.
Proven ability to schedule, organize and prioritize workload to meet fluctuating course schedules, deadlines and timeframes. Ability to function calmly and effectively in a variety of environments.
Demonstrated skills to conduct needs assessment and development of new training courses to meet organizational needs. Skills in planning, resourcing and monitoring effective delivery of training.
