Bachelor's degree and related experience; OR a combination of education and related experience totaling more than 4 years.
General farming experience in Iowa or surrounding states. Demonstrated knowledge of or experience with general crop production (corn, soybeans, oats in U.S. midwest). Experience operating farm equipment such as tractors. Experience installing, maintaining, and operating precision ag equipment. Experience building, repairing, and maintaining farm equipment and research plot equipment. Experience installing, repairing, maintaining, and programming weather stations. Experience with construction and Â maintenance of agricultural buildings, rural residences, and grain storage. Valid driver's license with good driving record (ability to get commercial driver's license). Ability to get commercial pesticide applicators certification.
The Iowa State University Research Farms is currently seeking applicants for the position of Agricultural Specialist I or II. The ISU Research Farms consist of 12 staffed locations statewide that conduct site-specific agricultural research and demonstrations. The Ag Specialist will assist with managing agronomic research and demonstration activities at the ISU Ag Engineering/Agronomy Research Farm, Boone IA, and ISU Research Farms, Story and Boone counties. Assist with ag field research related to crops, soils, mechanics, and structures along with demonstration activities.
Conduct and coordinate on-farm trials across central Iowa. Â Will assist with extension programming, developing and managing the agricultural trials program on cooperating private farmers' fields and with area agribusinesses, focusing on crops (especially corn and soybeans), soils, manure management, and pest (weeds, insects, and diseases) management. Â This position involves the recruitment of cooperating farmers and agribusinesses, contacting potential project leaders, building relationships, developing and implementing experimental plans, and keeping cooperating farmers engaged. The Ag Specialist will collect and maintain accurate agricultural records, and in conjunction with the ISU area extension agronomists and agricultural engineers, will assist with agricultural-related extension programming including organizing meetings, answering inquiries, preparing research reports, and providing training.
Assist with planning and conducting field research trials related to corn, soybeans, soils, and accurately collecting data and assisting farm managers and project leaders.
Assist with farm equipment design, fabrication, modification, and repair including metal work, hydraulics, electrical, electronics, and global positioning systems.
Assist with installation, programming, troubleshooting, and maintaining automated weather station system across Iowa (approximately 25 remote sites statewide).
Assist with maintenance and facilities on rental farm residences.
