Position Description: The California NanoSystems Institute (CNSI) at UCLA produces life-changing scientific, economic and social impact in California and across the world. Under the supervision of the Audio Visual and Information Technology Manager, and as part of the AV/IT Team, the Linux Systems Administrator will contribute to the team's mission: Enable the effective use of technology to achieve Institute objectives.
The primary responsibilities will include administration and maintenance of Linux desktops and servers (running RHEL, CentOS and Scientific Linux) where tasks include security patching, OS upgrades, troubleshooting problems, and ensuring maximum availability. Additional responsibilities consist of the supporting Linux applications and services, enforcement of IT security best practices, the monitoring, investigation and remediation of cyber security threats, network troubleshooting and administration, and the technical support of peripheral computing devices. The incumbent will work closely with Technology Center leadership staff to develop an in-depth knowledge of their processes and computing needs. This position with work in collaboration with the Electron Imaging Center for Nanomachines Technical Director to administer, maintain and support a new high-performance computing cluster and parallel file system, storage array. The incumbent is expected to stay current with the latest IT security threats and work with campus partners to assess network security levels and compliance, Institute IT security best practices, and develop and implement action-plans to improve system and network security. The incumbent will work with the AV/IT Team and campus service providers to monitor the health and overall performance of the department's network hardware, physical and virtual servers, UPSes, storage solutions, databases, and web services. Other tasks include the evaluation, recommendation, implementation and support of new hardware and software technologies, documentation of systems and processes, the training of staff, researchers and CNSI building residents regarding network access procedures, software applications, security best practices and policies, and hardware usage, serve as backup for other AV/IT team members, and perform other duties as assigned. System maintenance activities may require work to occur during non-business hours and weekends.
