Reporting to the UMSI Director of Marketing and Communications, the Senior Communications Editor will be responsible for creating and executing all facets of its communications strategy in collaboration with a number of other UMSI departments and programs. This senior role will be responsible for all elements related to writing, press releases, copywriting, web writing, media relations and promotion of the school through internal and external journalistic channels. In collaboration with leadership from the M&C team and other UMSI units, this position will enact the school’s communications strategy and will provide the communications-related reports, metrics and information necessary for leadership to evaluate and refine those plans moving forward.
The Senior Communications Editor will supervise a team composed of a Public Relations Specialist, a Marketing & Communications Writer, and various temporary writers. We’re looking for someone who wants to execute ambitious communications strategy with the support of a dedicated, creative staff.

As Senior Communications Editor, your responsibilities will include:
Creating best-in-class communications (50%):
Create, in collaboration with the Director of Marketing and Communications and other UMSI units, written communications for the school and each of its programs, with comprehensive attention to the tone, phrases and words used to describe each;
Partner with our Office of Academic and Student Affairs and M&C leadership to collaboratively design in-depth recruitment marketing language for each degree program;
Collaborate with our UMSI Development and Alumni Relations team to plan and execute effective communications about events, to attract and retain donors with regular outreach, and to advance campaign goals with specific outreach and routine newsletters and other points of contact;
Enacting communications tactics and measuring their success (30%):
Create, coordinate and manage techniques and tactics as directed by the annual Communications Tactics Plan -- including social media content, stories, profiles, copywriting, scripts, media relations and other M&C writing -- to achieve UMSI Marketing and Communications goals;
Create a brief semi-annual report for the Director of Marketing and Communications on progress made and results seen from our communications, which will be used for strategic discussion and adjustments;
Coordinate with the UMSI M&C team to measure the success of our communications efforts using metrics including website visits, traffic and user behavior; conversions; use and engagement with other materials and outreach; rankings and ratings; media mentions and placements; and other metrics;
Generate high-level copy (including our lead marketing copy and speechwriting for the dean) in support of our communications strategy.
Managing your team (20%):
Supervise various permanent and temporary employees, help to manage projects involving those employees, and communicate out to other UMSI units about those projects;
Manage the day-to-day operations of the M&C communications team, including: goal-setting; professional development; workload equity; compliance with standards; services and deliverables that provide consistency and dependability in meeting customer and organizational expectations.
Ensure effective communications about normal operations and exceptions that might impact our services and projects, and escalate appropriately.
Manage staff including recruitment, work plan, development, training, performance evaluation and various other functions.
A bachelor’s degree in marketing, information, technology, journalism, communications, English, or a related field
Minimum of five years of progressively increasing experience in communications or marketing-related positions
Minimum of two years of experience managing employees, including recruiting, mentoring, career development and performance management, leadership, and/or team building.
Experience in writing stories and/or copy for professional outlets
Basic familiarity or experience with current corporate, university and non-profit writing styles
Experience editing professional writers’ output
Proven experience managing complex projects, such as communications plans involving a wide variety of media, timelines, employee contributions, metrics, etc.
Excellent judgment regarding standards and ethics
Experience working with diverse organizational units as part of day-to-day responsibilities
Ability to work in shared, collaborative space; ability to work in a fast-paced environment; ability to independently manage a position that changes from day to day.
An advanced degree in marketing, information, technology, computer science, journalism, communications, English, or a related field
Experience working in an academic environment
Five years of experience managing highly functioning creative employees
Experience managing public relations and communications
Experience writing development and fundraising letters and materials
High level, significant editing experience
Experience managing media relations and speechwriting
Demonstrated creativity in approach to marketing and/or communications projects.
