Project: Practical Wisdom and Intelligent Machines
Applications are invited for a postdoctoral associate position funded at the University of Pittsburgh by an award to Prof. Colin Allen (History & Philosophy of Science) from the Templeton World Charity Foundation with the title "Practical Wisdom and Intelligent Machines". The successful applicant will hold a PhD on or before May 15, 2020 in a field relevant to the project and is expected to have demonstrable capacity to work in an interdisciplinary context that involves philosophy, computing, and cognitive science. The goal of the project is to develop a framework for defining and enhancing practical wisdom in human-machine interactions. The postdoc and principal investigator will work together to develop strategies and recommendations for mitigating dangers that arise due to both current limitations in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AI/ML) Systems and the barriers to sound, experience-based judgment when humans must make real-time adjustments to AI/ML behavior with only partial understanding of how such systems work. The duties of the postdoctoral associate will be split between collaborative research with the P.I. including preparing manuscripts for publication (50%), their own research (25%), and coordinating workshops and other collaborations funded by the grant (25%). The initial appointment will be for 12 months with the possibility of renewal for an additional 12 months. Budgeted salary for year one is $50,000 plus benefits. Budgeted salary for year two is $52,514 plus benefits.
