The Department of Mechanical Engineering (ME) at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) invites applications for a non-tenure track position at the rank of Senior Lecturer or Professor of the Practice (PoP) with an emphasis on Control Systems. Although the position will focus on teaching classes in Control Systems, highly qualified candidates in related areas are encouraged to apply. The successful candidate will also be responsible for leading our senior capstone design class, and advising student teams, for example our Mini-Baja team. The preferred starting date for the position is in fall 2020 (August).
The preferred qualification is a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering or a closely related discipline. Ideal candidates will have evidence of strong organizational skills, and experience with ABET accreditation. Experience in academia, industry, and/or government will be considered in the evaluation of the candidate. Candidates who have had a non-academic career with a commitment to teaching are encouraged to apply. Strong industry experience is preferred for an appointment as a PoP.
This Lecturer/PoP position is renewable. The lecturer/PoP teaches a wide range of courses in Dynamic Systems and Control, primarily at the undergraduate level, advises students, mentors teaching assistants, and helps shape departmental practices and policies. The lecturer is expected to continue the professional growth and will have the opportunity to be promoted through the ranks of Senior Lecturer and Principal Lecturer.
The ME department is committed to diversity and inclusivity. The department is large and growing, with a diverse community of approximately 650 undergraduate majors. Lecturers and a cadre of tenure-track faculty are the driving force behind the department's broad effort to ensure a quality education for our undergraduates: working to improve mechanical engineering education, curriculum, diversity, and student support. ME faculty collaborate with the Center for Women in Technology (CWIT) to increase the diversity of those who create technology, with programs designed for women in computing and engineering, transfer students from underrepresented groups, and diverse students interested in mechanical engineering. In addition to our undergraduate programs, the department has a dynamic and vibrant graduate program in mechanical engineering. There are more than 80 graduate students at the Ph.D. and M.S. levels studying in our four thematic areas: Biomechanical Engineering, Dynamic Systems and Design, Engineering Education, Solid Mechanics and Materials Science, and Thermal/Fluids Sciences. Our faculty enjoy collaboration within the department, across departments, and with partners outside the university.
