Essential Job Duties:
Primary duties of the HVAC Technician include, but are not limited to the following: Maintenance, repair, installation and operation of heating, venting, air conditioning and refrigeration systems (generally designated as HVAC/R) and the associated auxiliary equipment, controls, components and hydronic systems that would be found in a commercial, industrial or large university setting.
This position requires a highly skilled trades person working at an advanced level, proficient in HVAC/R, electrical, plumbing/pipefitting and general building maintenance as required within the maintenance service zone(s) and may function in a team leader, technical trainer or supervisory capacity at times.
Must be able to safely work on extension ladders and high lifts. Must be able to work in confined spaces. Must participate in quarterly on-call program, carrying a pager for one week at a time. This occurs every ten to fourteen weeks. Must be able to work overtime and/or alternate shifts when necessary for emergencies and unforeseen circumstances. This position has been designated as essential personnel for the University and may be required to report to work during adverse weather conditions even though the University may be operating on an alternate schedule. This position may assist with snow and ice removal under the direction of a supervisor.
High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Some positions may require special licenses or certification(s).
Optional Guidelines: Experience in the trade(s) areas related to the area of assignment may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
Knowledge of local, state and national codes pertaining to the trades assigned.
Technical training in HVAC trade.
Must be able to communicate effectively verbally with supervisors and the general public and understand verbal and written instructions and other communications regarding work assignments.
Multi-trade experience with a concentration in HVAC, electrical, steam, plumbing, and controls.
Computer literacy is required for this position. This would include the use of hand-held electronic devices, in the field.
Must be able to lift up to 60 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodations.
Five to seven years of multi-trade experience with a concentration in HVAC, electrical, and plumbing.
Two years of experience in the operation, troubleshooting and repair of building automation systems and controls.
Universal CFC certificate.
Required license or certification:
A valid NC Driver’s License or the ability to obtain one within 60 days of employment.
NC Driver’s license must be maintained as a condition of employment.
