The Department of Mechanical Engineering at Iowa State University is seeking applicants for an Academic Adviser I or II with responsibilities in the area of student services. The Academic Adviser will play a key role in recruiting, retaining, and enhancing the academic experience of undergraduate students.
Duties include assisting students with scheduling, registration, degree audits and course selection, teaching Freshman orientation, and referring students to appropriate resources necessary for retention and academic success. This position will also assist with recruitment activities such as meeting with prospective students and their families and by contacting community colleges and high schools to promote the undergraduate program.
In addition to the above responsibilities, the Academic Adviser II position will also plan, develop, and teachÂ orientation/seminarÂ courses; teach and develop a career planning course; coordinate learning community programs; serve on university, college and departmental committees; and provide careerÂ guidance and counseling.
The successful candidate will possess the ability to work independently; possess excellent communication skills; have the ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships; possess excellent problem solving skills in order to navigate a variety of procedures, policies, and methods; and a team focus, both within the department, as well as, the community at large. All staff members are expected to interact collegially and maintain the highest standards of integrity and ethics.
The required minimum qualifications to be considered for the Academic Adviser II are:Â Bachelor's degree and 5 years of related experience; OR a Master's degree and 3 years of related experience.
