Kirkwood's ESL Program is an AmeriCorps program site. We will be looking for 2 AmeriCorps members to serve in our program on main campus in Cedar Rapids.
GENERAL JOB SUMMARY: The Educate & Elevate AmeriCorps program has been developed to on-board and train tutors to assist adult learners who lack adult education and literacy (AEL) skills and/or have not completed their high school equivalency diploma. Accepted AmeriCorps members will receive all necessary volunteer training to be successful in this new role through such resources as Literacy New York's (LNY) highly successful Intake to Outcomes (I2O) online training platform. Specific job duties and roles will focus on working with adult learners in the areas of English as a Second Language, and basic mathematics.
Provide a Term of Service of 675 total hours in our community ESL program.
Teaching Assistant for ESL morning and evening classes.
Small group tutoring for literacy, mathematics, and science.
Manage ESL lab for 1:1 tutoring for computer literacy and employment skills.
Term of Service dates: Now - August 20, 2020.
Flexible hours Monday - Thursday.
Morning sessions 9:00am - 1:00pm.
Evening sessions 5:00pm - 9:00pm.
Members gain hands-on experience in a professional setting working with community college adult education programs and community organizations serving adult learners.
A living allowance is provided to all members. The amount of this payment is related to the level of service a member performs.
All members can have employment outside of the time commitment to their service term.
After successfully completing a term of service, members are eligible to receive a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award. This award can be used to repay qualified student loans or to pay education costs at qualified institutions of higher learning. The education award may be used up to seven years after the term of service has ended.
Members who are at least 55 years of age at the beginning of their term of service may choose to transfer their education award to a child, grandchild, or foster child.
Living Allowance for Term of Service: $5,400.
Education Award: $2,321 after completing Term of Service of 675 hours.
Total Value of Financial Award: $7,721.
18 years of age or older.
High School diploma or equivalency certificate.
U.S. Citizenship or legal resident with I9 documentation.
Pass a three part criminal background check.
Experience working with English Language Learners.
Goal to pursue a degree in education.
Strong cross-cultural communication skills.
Foreign Language experience (French, Arabic, Spanish, other).
Experience tutoring adults.
