Position Summary This position focuses on customized stewardship of major University of Minnesota donors, and on effectively making the case for continued giving. He/she works as part of the Creative Resources team, which among other charges, creates materials that development officers use in stewarding and soliciting top-level individual donors and prospects. The focus of this position is on producing reports that show the impact of donors’ giving and engagement with the U of M using both print and digital formats, although other writing for development purposes may also be assigned. This role involves a high level of collaboration with University of Minnesota Foundation (UMF) and University of Minnesota staff, and also involves contact with faculty and students.
1. Research, write, and produce custom stewardship reports—both web- and paper-based—for top donors to effectively convey impact of giving. (90%)
Consult with supervisor to determine annual portfolio of reports.
Collaborate with UMF development colleagues and supervisor to determine specific strategy, timing, content, and delivery for assigned reports.
Cultivate strong working relationships with UMF and other University staff for strategic collaboration in gathering information and achieving stewardship and cultivation goals.
Develop report content, incorporating personalized stories as well as financial and other data to effectively convey the impact of the donor’s gifts.
Use suite of Publisher or web-based templates and collaborate with UMF’s Design team to fit content and visuals into layout.
Manage the production process for each assigned report to meet expectations for timing and quality.
2. Research, write, and proof copy for other projects that help to fulfill overall stewardship and cultivation strategies for top donors. (10%)
Develop copy and manage timelines and production process, working with UMF Design and other colleagues on special projects as assigned.
Bachelor’s degree in English, communications, journalism, or related field, plus 2 years professional experience, or 6 years combined equivalent education and experience
Excellent writing, research, and verbal skills
Excellent proofing and editing skills and experience following an institution’s style guide
Skills in Microsoft Suite, especially Publisher, as well as in Google products
Strong attention to detail
Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to establish and maintain relationships at all organizational levels
Demonstrated project management experience
Ability to take initiative and function independently, and as part of a team
Basic understanding of financial terms
Minimum three years professional writing experience
Writing experience in donor relations or fundraising
Experience and/or comfort with learning to work on the design and layout of reports
Experience in creating digital content
Experience working in a complex organization
