This position will support a Laboratory strategic initiative to develop stellarator pilot plant designs. The stellarator is an attractive approach for a fusion pilot plant due to steady-state operation, low recirculating power, and being free of current-driven disruptions. Recent advances in stellarator physics and engineering have created opportunities to investigate new stellarator configurations (coils and plasmas) that are optimized to satisfy attractiveness criteria such as good energetic particle confinement, reduced turbulent transport, self-consistent divertor operation, simpler coil geometries, and efficient maintenance. New concepts like using permanent magnets for 3D shaping provide unique solutions that need further exploration.
The main job functions are:
Code development and maintenance of the STELLOPT suite of codes.
Exploration of new concepts and designs for optimized stellarators.
Development, using STELLOPT and other physics analysis tools, of improved stellarator plasma and coil configurations targeting mission goals subject to constraints for near-term permanent magnet stellarators and long-term pilot plant embodiments.
Education and Experience:
Ph.D. in plasma physics or related disciplines and 2 years post-doctoral experience.
Professional experience in developing and using stellarator optimization codes, like STELLOPT and others
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Fluency in modern programming (FORTRAN, Python, etc.) and the ability to work with large scale computational tools.
