The Coordinator of First-Year Academic Programs will play a critical role in updating and implementing first-year experience programs for new first-year students entering UMBC. Programs include summer bridge, living learning communities, and assistance with first-year courses.
Reporting to the Director for First-Year & Transfer Academic Programs in Academic Engagement & Transition Programs, the incumbent will develop and implement programs supporting the success of new students at UMBC. Programs include, but are not limited to: summer bridge, living-learning communities, first-year courses, transfer courses, as well as other retention efforts related to advising, assessment efforts, administrative responsibilities, and representing AETP at collaborative programs both on- and off-campus. Additionally, the Program Coordinator will assist and support with aspects of a newly developed mandatory first-year experience course to engage all new students and improve overall retention and graduation rates on campus.
To accomplish the above goals, the Program Coordinator will work closely with staff, faculty, and students in planning and coordinating efforts that contribute to establishing UMBC’s First-Year Experience (FYE) efforts for first-year and transfer students. Specific duties include: assisting with implementation and expansion of summer options (for both traditional first-year and transfer students); assisting with day-to-day academic operations related to living-learning communities; assisting with development and implementation of a mandatory first-year experience course (including scheduling and training for faculty, staff, and peer facilitators); supporting assessment efforts for the above programs; supporting marketing and recruitment efforts for the above programs, and performing other duties as assigned.
Required Minimum Qualifications:
Education/Experience: Requires a bachelor’s degree (master’s degree in higher education/student affairs/related field prefered) and a minimum of one year of experience working in higher education.
Experience working with program development, program implementation, training programs, summer experience programs, and curriculum preferred. Ability to work collaboratively, excellent verbal and written communication skills, ability to build rapport, superb organizational skills, ability to work autonomously and as part of a small team, and problem-solving skills required. Supervisory, assessment, and/or social media and general marketing experience desired but not required.
