The College of St. Scholastica, a multi-campus institution in the Catholic Benedictine tradition with its main campus in Duluth, Minnesota, is seeking an innovative, inspiring, and transformational leader to serve as Vice President of Human Resources.
POSITION SCOPE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Vice President of Human Resources provides strategic leadership and direction, in alignment with the College’s mission and vision, to all facets of human resource management throughout the College.
Reporting directly to the President, the Vice President of Human Resources leads the recruitment and retention, compensation, benefits, training and development, risk management, payroll, and employee relations functions for the College. The Vice President also has responsibility for assisting with implementation of the Inclusive Excellence Strategic Plan, Equal Employment Opportunity, Affirmative Action, ADA, and Title IX. An active member of the President’s Cabinet, the Vice President participates in institutional strategy, planning and decision making, change management and organization design, playing an important role in moving the institution’s strategic initiatives forward.
Ensures that all HR programs and initiatives are integrated and effective in supporting the overall mission, goals and objectives of the College.
Oversees the operations and administration of all HR functions including talent acquisition and management, benefits, health and wellness, compensation, training and development, onboarding, payroll, employee relations, succession planning, diversity, equity and inclusion, HR budgeting and compliance.
Serves as the EEOC/ADA Officer for the College; assures compliance with diversity laws and policies and creates new opportunities for equality for people of all races, gender, sexuality, ability and age; handles complaints and investigations; conducts investigations, oversees the Title IX Coordinator; reviews all requests for ADA accommodations and collaboratively determines the accommodation to be provided.
Protects the interests of the college and employees by ensuring that the College is in compliance with state and federal regulatory requirements and college policies and procedures; develops, implements, and revises policies and procedures for effective management of the institution; collaborates with managers to ensure consistent compliance.
Coaches supervisors and other employees in strategies to improve skills and performance, equipping them with the tools and knowledge they need to be more effective in their work.
Monitors labor contract compliance for college unions; participates in the grievance process and contract negotiations with a thoughtful and considered approach.
Directly participates in institutional planning and decision making as a member of the President’s Cabinet, providing strategic direction and expert consultation.
Advances the college’s Inclusive Excellence Plan in order to foster equity and inclusion in all facets of human resources.
Supervises and evaluates HR staff; provides leadership; encourages professional development, initiative, innovate thinking and continuous learning.
Manages budget for the Human Resources Division.
Education and Experience
Master’s Degree in business administration or related field and five years of senior level management experience over a comprehensive human resources function, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Knowledge and Skills:
Expertise with Human Resources functions: HR systems, talent acquisition and management, benefits, employee relations, compensation, training and development, payroll, and risk management.
Demonstrated high level of skill in leading, motivating, and engaging people, including those who work remotely or at other sites, championing change, strategic planning and human relations.
Demonstrated competence in interpreting and complying with federal and state legislation and College policies, including EEO, Affirmative Action, Title IX, and ADA.
Ability to work effectively with an open and collaborative leadership style that encourages teamwork with internal and external constituents.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills including strong presentation skills.
Excellent critical thinking, judgment, and decision-making ability.
Demonstrated experience promoting a work culture that values diversity, equity and inclusion as central to the institution’s success.
Problem-solving skills including conflict resolution and employee relations
Proven experience in fostering process improvement and the development and implementation of effective and efficient business practices.
Demonstrated integrity and high ethical standards in all facets of work.
