Description: Research in the Healy Lab at the University of California, Berkeley emphasizes the relationship between materials and the cells or tissues they contact. The research program focuses on the design and synthesis of bioinspired materials that actively direct the fate of mammalian cells, and facilitate regeneration of damaged tissues and organs. Major discoveries from his laboratory have centered on the control of cell fate and tissue formation in contract with materials that are tunable in both their biological content and mechanical properties. Professor Healy also has extensive experience with human stem cell technologies, microphysiological systems, drug delivery systems, and novel bioconjugate therapeutics.
Responsibilities: The successful candidate will work to establish an in vitro model of the human heart tissue that will have a significant impact on the early screening of chemotherapeutic candidate drugs and assessing their cardiac toxicity. Project Scientist will use cells from cardiomyopathy patients with diverse backgrounds, as a step to using our device to advance the goals of personalized medicine. Be responsible for device fabrication and characterization, tissue response testing, data interpretation and write up. Contribute to testing the electrophysiology, force measurements, and contraction metrics of the cardiac microtissues, and in collaboration with the mass spectrometry facility staff assess the metabolic function and response to pharmacological agents and chemotherapy drugs. The successful candidate will also develop new methodology for drug-biomarker pairing. Assist the PI in managing NIH grants as well as mentoring other personnel in the laboratory.
Minimum/Basic Qualifications required at the time of application:
PhD or equivalent international degree.
Additional Qualifications must be met by the start of the job:
2+ years of post degree research experience
4 + years' experience in stem cell science and development of in vitro tissue models.
Demonstrate experience with human cardiomyocyte biology is essential.
PhD or equivalent international degree. in molecular and cell biology, bioengineering, or a related field are encouraged to apply.
