The Department of Animal Science at Iowa State University invites applications for a research associate position in a lab that combines immunology, microbiology, genetics, and animal husbandry, to develop a pig model for testing stem cells in human regenerative medicine. Genetic mutations have been discovered that cause pigs at Iowa State University to have no adaptive immune system. Because of this lack of an immune system, there is a need to develop the animal care and environmental conditions to keep such pigs alive and healthy for such testing. This position will be responsible, in collaboration with Laboratory Animal Resources staff and Dr. Tuggle, for the design and implementation of specific experiments aimed at understanding the best way to care for and grow pigs in an extremely clean environment (defined as animals maintained as specific pathogen free (SPF) pigs for up to 1-2 years).
Additional duties will include assisting with bone marrow transplants to cure the SCID disease conducted by others in the collaborative group, and routine genetic testing of animals that may or may not carry the mutations causing the SCID disease. In addition, the successful candidate will be responsible for preparing data for presentations and peer-reviewed manuscripts related to the research project. This position also includes lab managerial responsibilities, such as ordering of supplies and chemicals, maintaining equipment, maintaining a safe laboratory environment, and some supervision of undergraduate students and collaboration with other lab personnel, which include postdoctoral researchers and graduate students.
The successful candidate will have the ability to work independently as well as strong organizational skills and time management skills. Leadership ability and the ability to be detail oriented is essential for success in this position.
