Business Analysts clarify the business needs of a group of stakeholders and help find solutions to meet those identified needs. They think creatively, anticipate needs, test solutions and describe defects to system functionality. Additionally they monitor processes and help troubleshoot when problems arise.
A successful team member in this position will establish strong relationships with stakeholders and colleagues on all UMN campuses. They will assist in providing leadership and support for academic student services that rely on the interaction and development of student information systems and data analytics. The work will include supporting curriculum and transfer of academic credit system, operational deliverables, schedules, reporting and analytics. This person must have knowledge of student records business processes, be willing to learn and adapt to new and ever changing situations and technologies, and be able to assist in leading change management and communication with diverse audiences.
A strong candidate will have six months to a year or more experience of programming and development in Microsoft business toolsets, Google suite technologies, Oracle/PeopleSoft, and/or other common tools and programming languages. Experience with the University of Minnesota and a general knowledge of Higher Education academic programs, policies and student records practices is preferred. This person will daily use strong technical and non-technical oral and written communication skills in direct support of UMD's strategic mission. They will work with students, but may not on a daily basis. The work of this position requires collaboration with others in teams. This work includes assessment of current and future needs, make sustainable technology recommendations, and the ability to implement best practices, and support academic record and information compliance including quality control procedures, testing and record audits. Assists in supervising student employees, including mentoring and assisting in the coordination of professional development.
Essential Job Functions, Duties & Responsibilities: Business & Systems Analysis (30%)
Assess academic policy and requirements to identify curricular issues that may impede students' progress toward their degree and academic objectives
Analyze, design, program/encode, test, and troubleshoot the transformation of university curriculum and academic decisions into available information systems and student academic records
Assists with creating detailed test plans. Executes and documents test plans, statistics, metrics, and results
Develop a deep understanding of the relationships of student records related systems, including Oracle/Campus Solutions, curricular systems (PCAS, ECAS), transfer and degree audit systems (TES, OARS, uAchieve), etc.
Support Office of the Registrar business process operations, assisting others or providing direct services in the areas of information system research and support, operational calendar maintenance, scheduling and troubleshooting technically complex batch jobs including error report reconciliation
Develop skills and knowledge to analyze, design, and maintain operational student records data analytics and the UMD Office of the Registrar operational schedule
Gather information for departmental analytics and assist in the preparation of the departmental annual report
Assists in supporting Office of the Registrar daily operations
Understand and use best practices and industry standards for the benefit of students, staff, and faculty and external stakeholders
Analyze, develop and troubleshoot operational student data that integrates across the University of Minnesota Duluth to support decision making and illustrate processes; charts, graphs, heat maps, workflows etc.
Collaborate with a diverse group of managers and decision makers to identify and solve a variety of problems associated with business processes
Assists in working with stakeholders on needs assessment with academic policy, business practices, and student information systems
Translate functional needs into technical specifications and works with experienced analysts on information system setup, enhancements, modifications, and troubleshooting
Write test plans and functional documentation
Assists in provide team leadership, including effective communication and participation in staff activities
Communicate information in an effective and timely manner; resolve problems
Prepares effective documentation and training materials and coordinate and/or deliver ongoing training
Special Projects (30%)
Works in collaboration with the central Academic Support Resources team and experts from other University of Minnesota campuses on a variety of projects; evaluates and follows through on issues and problems that require the ability to manage scope, timeline and resources to meet deliverables that are both technical and operational connected to our robust and complex, student information systems
Provide analysis, development, testing, documentation, and post -go live support for the implementation of projects
Assist in providing resolution to system integration problems; understand and implement best practice options for system efficiency and effectiveness
Contribute to departmental efforts in the areas of system evolution, minor and major upgrades, investigation and adoption of new services including support of knowledge transfer, etc.
Support established processes to assure data and process integrity, monitor for process improvement and efficiencies
Recommend short and long-term goals for the department; participate in the establishment of departmental objectives and policy in line with the campus and university mission; assist in preparation of department budget
Identify and promote student records, admissions, enrollment services and academic unit processes that will improve overall service quality
Use qualitative and quantitative data to support data driven decisions and ensure achievement of strategic enrollment management goals
Utilize best practices in all areas including change management for efficiency and effective service excellence
Grow and maintain a broad understanding of interrelated business processes in student administration
Perform on-going analysis and evaluation, establish performance benchmarks and enhance business processes and requirements in line with team goals
Develop an in depth knowledge of and remain in compliance with federal, state, local regulations and professional standards

BA/BS degree in computer science, computer technology or related fields
Six months to one year work or hands-on project experience in the areas of strategic business systems process analysis, coding, and development
Experience with analyzing and building data analytics, business information systems and developing data queries, updating data in mass, troubleshooting, and delivering user-friendly reports using standard query tools (SQR, SQL, etc.)
Experience with MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Google education suite tools, and programming/logic
Experience with writing business process documentation and specifications
Demonstrated ability to manage small to medium sized projects
Ability to engage stakeholders in meaningful and effective ways
Demonstrated collaboration, teamwork, and leadership in and educational setting.
Knowledge of academic records, University of Minnesota Duluth curriculum and the and business processes
Programming experience with Microsoft Business suite tools, Google Data Studio Google Analytics, Microsoft VISO or other visual charting/graphing software, uAchieve and/or Oracle’s Campus Solutions products
Experience in data analysis, report writing, information system analysis, business process analysis, and change management
Experience with Business Intelligence (BI), and web content delivery tools
