Under the general direction of a designated supervisor, independently plans, designs coordinates and implements large advanced networking systems, provides advanced topological and/or protocol diagnostics and trouble resolution, documents installations and maintains networking systems for the University's network services and operations to academic, administrative and student users.
This position is the focal point for all technical implementation and trouble resolution and generally understands and interprets the relationship between Open Systems Interconnect Standard (OSI) Session, Transport, Network, Physical and Link Layer networking to enable implement and support a combination of voice, video, broadcast and data network systems.
The candidate must work well with customers, vendors, peers and management and must have the ability to work independently as well as in team environments. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Configuring firewalls, routers and switches to maximize network efficiency and security
Recommend, design, and implement new networking solutions for the University Faculty and Staff.
Develop, review and maintain documentation for the planning, testing, implementation and use of network resources.
Analyze, diagnose and resolve complex network problems in a large environment for a variety of users.
Provide top level Tier 3 support, as well as supporting Tier 1 and 2 troubleshooting efforts as necessary.
Report network status to key stakeholders.
Perform other duties as required.
Design, plan, configure, implement and support those systems that comprise a contemporary network implementation. Prepares and manages on-time implementation of large projects including user data collection, network systems design for voice, data, or video, specification writing, purchasing, acquisition, physical network placement, on site coordination, activation, testing and final sign-off.
May direct or supervise one or more full time or student staff members. Delegate responsibility and supervise implementation as required.
Lead planning, implementation and integration of complex large scale network system issues across multiple disparate platforms and technologies, often at multiple locations, to create user-focus integrated networking systems and applications that are congruent with larger University strategic planning efforts.
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a discipline related to the field of computer networking or have at least 5 years of documented equivalent combination of training and experience.
Four to seven years of experience as a network engineer in support of a large-scale network.
Demonstrated ability to work with a diverse group of people and be able to prioritize work in a fast-paced environment.
Demonstrated ability to write specifications and document existing and planned network systems.
Excellent oral and written communication skills and attention to detail.
Implementation and troubleshooting of layer 2-3 switching and routing technologies from a major network vendor (Cisco, Juniper, Arista).
Working knowledge of routing protocols (OSPF, BGP) with an overall understanding of routing concepts.
Experience with firewalls from a major vendor.
Experience with network monitoring tools such as Whatsup Gold, Solarwinds, Cisco Prime.
Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines and work under pressure.
Must have reliable transportation and be willing to travel to locations throughout the state.
Relevant professional certification (CCNP, CCNA).
Demonstrated experience with Fortinet firewalls.
Demonstrated experience with Cisco Catalyst, Nexus and UCS platforms.
Demonstrated experience with Juniper routing and switching.
Demonstrated experience with Cisco Prime network monitoring software.
Demonstrated understanding of wireless design concepts and tools, using NetScout AirMagnet, Ekahau Site Surveyor, Cisco Prime.
Demonstrated experience in programming with Python or equivalent language.
Demonstrated experience in automation of processes using a scripting language.
Demonstrated experience with VOIP technologies and concepts.
General understanding of Microsoft Azure.
General understanding of cellular technologies and concepts.
At least seven years network related experience, which includes design and implementation of large-scale network systems. Specialized experience in at least one or more specialty areas.
Demonstrated ability to manage large or complex projects to achieve timely, successful completion.
