The Department of Political Science at the University of Connecticut is seeking to hire a tenure-track Assistant Professor in the area of International Relations, based at the University's Stamford campus, beginning in the Fall of 2020.
The successful candidate will provide undergraduate teaching and service at the University's Stamford campus, but may occasionally have the opportunity to teach a graduate seminar and contribute to the research opportunities at the University's main campus in Storrs. UConn Stamford is located 40 miles from New York City. Reappointment and tenure will be determined by the Department of Political Science at Storrs, with input from the Stamford campus.
The Department of Political Science has 37 faculty members, over 800 undergraduate students and 50 graduate students, and actively engages in research in American Politics, Comparative Politics, International Relations, Political Theory, and Public Law. Our faculty have enjoyed recognition for their scholarship both nationally and internationally. The department has traditionally featured an active Colloquia series that highlights scholars from UConn and other universities, as well as opportunities for collaboration with the Human Rights Institute, Africana Studies Institute, Asian and Asian American Studies Institute, Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Program, El Instituto, and many others. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to research and scholarship through extramural funding or fellowships and high-quality publications. They will be expected to aspire to gain national recognition as through honorific awards. In the area of teaching, the successful candidate will share a deep commitment to effective instruction at the undergraduate and graduate levels, development of innovative courses and mentoring of students in research, outreach and professional development. Newly hired faculty will also be expected to broaden participation among members of under-represented groups; demonstrate through their research, teaching, and/or public engagement the richness of diversity in the learning experience; and use culturally competent instructional methods and research tools.
A Ph.D. in Political Science or related field completed by start date; evidence or promise of a strong research/publication record; the ability to teach courses in political science at both the graduate and undergraduate levels; and a deep commitment to promoting diversity through their academic and research programs. All candidates must possess excellent communication skills. Equivalent foreign degrees are acceptable.
When the department adopted its current academic plan during the spring of 2019, department faculty identified three areas to emphasize in the future hiring of faculty: (1) Race and Ethnic politics; (2) International law, justice and human rights; and (3) Environmental politics and sustainability. Although this search is open to applicants with any substantive focus within the International Relations subfield, strengths in these areas will be considered during the formal selection process.
This is a full-time, 9-month, tenure-track position with an anticipated start date of August 23, 2020. The successful candidate's primary academic appointment will be at the Stamford campus with the possibility of assignment at UConn's main campus. Salary is competitive based on experience and qualifications.
