Patuxent Site Director, Prisons and Justice Initiative - Georgetown College
Georgetown University's Prisons and Justice Initiative was founded in 2016 in order to respond to the dual crisis of incarceration and recidivism. It brings together leading scholars, practitioners, and students to tackle the problem of mass incarceration--one of the most crucial moral and political issues of our time. Through public events, research seminars, and programs at local prisons/jails and for returning citizens in the Washington DC area, PJI works to better understand the causes and consequences of the mass incarceration crisis and to contribute to bipartisan solutions for effective reform.
The Site Director will serve as the primary liaison between Georgetown University and the Patuxent Institution (Patuxent) and will work on-site at Patuxent to assist in the implementation of the new program. The Site Director will enroll and advise students, obtain security clearances for instructors, escort instructors to Patuxent's education department, organize and oversee program's study hall sessions, manage program mentorship component, and maintain relationships with prison administrators.
Reporting to the Director of Education, the Site Director will engage with college students at the prison and from the main campus, faculty, prison staff and other stakeholders to deliver a Bachelor's of Liberal Arts to students incarcerated in Maryland; and, through that work contribute to the regional and national conversations about educational equity, poverty, and incarceration. Other key responsibilities will include but are not limited to:
Managing academic activities at the Patuxent Institution.
Liaison between Georgetown and Patuxent institution regarding enrollment, financial aid and class scheduling activities; and supervising student assistants while on-site.
Communication and Liaison:
Serving as the liaison between the correctional institution and Georgetown instructors, student assistants, and other staff.
Working as liaison between Georgetown and Patuxent institution regarding enrollment, financial aid and class scheduling activities.
Maintaining ongoing communication with Patuxent Institution administrators and staff.
Advising, Data Tracking and Reporting
Providing guidance and advice to students enrolled in the program.
Serving as academic adviser to assist undergraduate Bachelors of Liberal Arts students with course selection; and development of a plan of study for the most efficient completion of the degree program based on the students' needs.
Interpreting and explaining academic policies to students and faculty, including but not limited to plagiarism standards, grievance procedures and other issues outlined in the academic catalogue.
Support tracking and reporting of relevant data to Mellon, the Department of Education, and other grantors.
Participating in weekly Scholars Team meetings and biweekly PJI Team meetings.
Providing administrative support functions, including but not limited to coordinating program arrangements with various University Offices facilitating scheduling, processing instructional and staff contracts, budget requests and financial aid applications.
Teaching 2 credit-bearing courses per year at either the DC Jail or Patuxent Institution.
This position requires a Master's degree; Ph.D. preferred.
Extensive graduate-level experience in the social sciences, natural sciences, and/or humanities.
Extensive teaching experience.
Experience supervising and leading teams, including the ability to give clear and actionable feedback, to support each team member's development, and to support individual goal-setting of supervisees.
Outstanding communication skills (written, verbal, presentation, etc.).
Ability to manage multiple competing priorities/multiple projects within tight deadlines.
Mastery of computer skills (MS Office Suite with strong emphasis on Excel, Google Docs, Sheets, Groups, and Calendar, Air Table, etc.).
Ability to manage a high volume of close, multi-channel communication with team members.
Some duties for this job are performed inside Patuxent Institution and at the Georgetown University offices of PJI and will be required to work at least two evenings per week.
Strong organizational and time management skills; detail-orientation.
Aptitude for working in a culturally diverse environment; ability to interact patiently and diplomatically with a wide variety of constituencies.
Experience with prisons and prison education programs.
While teaching is a requirement, we are especially interested to hire Ph.Ds with the ability to teach core courses in our curriculum. Our program has core teaching needs in math & computer science, theology, history, writing, and the natural sciences
The position of Patuxent Site Director is an initial 1-year term position.
