The Joint Institute for the Study of the Atmosphere and Ocean (JISAO), part of the College of the Environment at UW, has existed since 1977 for the purpose of fostering research collaboration between the UW and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). JISAO's research is at the forefront of investigations on climate change, ocean acidification, fisheries assessments, and tsunami forecasting.
JISAO has an outstanding opportunity for a Postdoctoral Scholar in marine biogeochemistry. The successful applicant will be engaged in in full-time research and scholarship based at NOAA's Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory (PMEL), and will join a research team working on collecting and analyzing biogeochemical data in support of ocean research conducted by JISAO and NOAA. JISAO scientists will provide guidance to enhance the professional skills and research independence of the Scholar. The Scholar will be mentored also by PMEL scientists and UW affiliate professors Drs. Gregory Johnson and Richard Feely. Specifically, the postdoctoral scholar will conduct cutting-edge research on marine biogeochemical cycling in the California Current Large Marine Ecosystem (CCLME) using measurements from research vessels and Argo profiling floats with biogeochemical sensors (Argo-BGC).
Major duties include:
Development, assessment, and improvement of algorithms that use shipboard measurements from the CCLME to estimate seawater properties that are then used to calibrate and validate Argo-BGC sensors;
use of new and existing data in novel research investigating biogeochemical cycling in the CCLME;
leadership of and contributions to publications in peer-reviewed journals, presentations at scientific conferences, and proposals for additional research;
quality control and quality assessment of data returned from floats;
contributions to scientific data reports;
documentation of progress on tasks and communication of progress regularly with other team members and leadership.
This appointment is designed to provide postdoctoral experience for interested marine scientists in an interdisciplinary, collaborative laboratory setting, and will require excellent teamwork, communication, and organizational skills.

The term of the appointment is for one year, with a possible second year, subject to approval and availability of funding. A Postdoctoral Scholar is an academic appointment that requires evidence of a conferred PhD by the appointment start date and candidates cannot exceed five years of Postdoctoral experience prior to the end of an appointment.
a PhD in oceanography, marine science, chemistry, or related discipline;
three or more years of experience in marine biogeochemical research;
proficiency with Python, MATLAB, or comparable programming language for quantitative analysis;
ability to operate scientific equipment, including diagnosing and resolving instrumental problems;
familiarity with publishing scientific manuscripts;
The following are desired qualifications:
Laboratory and / or at-sea experience working with autonomous oceanographic sensor technology;
experience working with large-scale or regional computational biogeochemical model output;
demonstrated responsibility and accountability;
demonstrated strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and effective verbal and written communication skills;
ability to work independently and as part of a team, interacting cooperatively with people from diverse backgrounds and academic levels;
ability to quickly develop technical skills that support research activities;
interest in marine biogeochemistry;
