This is an entry-level position. Under direct supervision, performs a variety of routine duties such as cleaning, feeding, and minimal record keeping. The primary purpose of the position is to ensure the health and well-being of the laboratory animals.
Job Functions/Responsibilities will include: Performs general animal care by feeding animals, providing enrichment, cleaning kennels, cages, bowls, toys and rooms, filling cages and pans with bedding and litter, completing animal room logs, washing carts, etc. Consistently checks that all areas are stocked with necessary supplies. Evaluates general animal health, administers oral and topical medications as necessary. Works in the cage wash area to wash supplies. Maintains accurate records of actions performed.
Performs general housekeeping duties to include mopping, cleaning, dusting, taking out trash, etc. Notifies Manager and Maintenance Staff regarding issues found within the facilities on a daily basis. Notifies Manager, OLAC veterinarians, and the appropriate Principal Investigator of any clinical issues found while working with the animals. Keeps Manager up-to-date on any information regarding the PI and their respective technicians; likewise, being update by the Manager on protocols, PI, etc. Attends OLAC training.
Follows Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to correctly sanitize and put away all enrichment, rodent cages, litter pans, etc. Follows SOPs to store all food, bedding, and other supplies and to properly house newly arrived animals. Assists in the transport of supplies and animals between buildings when necessary.
