FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT
In support of the campus mission, strategic plans and values, the Graduate School of Library & Information Studies (GSLIS) department Queens College seeks to fill one vacancy at the Associate or Full Professor level, starting in the Fall 2020 semester. We seek someone with a strong background in Children's and Young Adult Services in Public Libraries. Full- time faculty generally teach one or more of the core courses. They share responsibility for committee and department assignments including administrative, supervisory, and other functions
The GSLIS is the only publicly supported American Library Association accredited school of library and information studies in the metropolitan New York City area. Administratively, the GSLIS is placed within the College's Social Science Division and the Chair/Director reports directly to the Dean of that division. The GSLIS offers a broad curriculum. In addition to the M.L.S. degree, it offers a 30 credit Certificate of Post-Master's Studies in Librarianship, a Certificate in Archives and Preservation of Cultural Materials, a Certificate in Children's and Young Adult Services in Public Libraries, three programs for the preparation of New York State certified School Library Media Specialists, and a dual master's degree program (jointly offered with the History department) in Library Science and History (MLS/MA). The GSLIS has a large and highly diverse student body, less than twenty percent of whom attend full-time.
Candidates must possess a Ph.D. in library/information science or a related field. Qualified applicants must have at least one earned degree in library science or its equivalent. The successful candidate will have experience teaching in higher education and a demonstrated record for research and service. Evidence of attaining external funding expected for rank of Full Professor. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated record of research and service at the graduate level to merit appointment at the City University of New York; experience in library/information science education; and excellent communication skills.
Qualified candidates will have research and teaching expertise as well as practical experience in one or more of the following areas:
Children's and young adult services in public libraries
Youth activism and social justice
Digital equity, diversity and inclusion
Child and adolescent development, youth literacy development
Traditional and current children and young adult fiction and nonfiction materials, both in print and other formats; including but not limited to, picture books, graphic novels, and games.
Qualified candidates will be expected to align with our departments commitment to eradicating racial disparities for graduate study and careers in library and information science. Preference will be given to the candidate with expertise in both traditional and current children and young adult fiction and nonfiction materials and digital environments and practical expertise working in libraries.
