Le Moyne College, Syracuse, NY, invites applications for a Writing Center Professional Writing Tutor and Outreach Coordinator and Adjunct Instructor. This full-time, 10-month appointment (August-May) involves working 15-25 hours/week at the Writing Center as the Professional Writing Tutor and Outreach Coordinator and teaching 1-2 First-Year Critical Writing classes per semester.
As the Writing Center's Professional Writing Tutor and Outreach Coordinator, the person in this position will work closely with the Director for the Writing Center to develop effective strategies for continuing to support writing and the instruction of writing across campus. This individual will work in the Writing Center to tutor Le Moyne student writers with the goal of developing and advancing their writing competencies. Tutoring may include helping writers who are developing academic or professional texts to organize or clarify ideas, develop strong arguments, evaluate evidence, and understand and utilize grammatical conventions. Particular students who may benefit from more extended tutoring assistance or expertise will be assigned. Within the role of Outreach Coordinator, this individual will work with the Director for the Writing Center and faculty and staff members to design and facilitate orientations, lessons, workshops, and events that promote writing and writing instruction in specific courses, across campus, and in the wider community. The Professional Writing Tutor and Outreach Coordinator will also aid in the ongoing management and development of the writing tutoring services by assessing tutoring usage and pedagogy, engaging in and supporting tutors' professional development, and performing other administrative tasks. Expected working hours will be set each semester depending on availability and teaching schedules; the Writing Center is generally open 10:00 am-5:00pm, Monday-Friday and 3:00-7:00pm, Sunday.
As an Adjunct Writing Instructor, each semester the person in this position will design and teach 1-2 sections of critical writing - WRT 100 and/or WRT 101. Adjunct Writing Instructors report to the Director and Assistant Director of First-Year Writing.
EDUCATION: A Master's degree in English, Composition and Rhetoric, or a related field is required.
Previous experience tutoring writing
Preference will be given to candidates who possess a strong record of teaching.
Successful candidates should also have the ability to work with students from diverse cultural backgrounds and foster cooperative working relationships with students, staff, faculty, and community members.
