UW Information Technology (UW-IT) is the central information technology organization for the University of Washington, responsible for strategic planning, oversight, and direction of the UW’s IT infrastructure, resources, and services. Business & Finance is an internal unit within UW Information Technology (UW-IT). It is focused on providing critical business, financial, and logistical support services to the various divisions within UW Information Technology. These services include: Accounting, Resource planning and budgeting, Financial reporting and analysis, Management reporting, cost center accounting and rate development, Procurement, Asset and inventory management and Logistical support.
UW-IT has an outstanding opportunity for an Assistant Director of Finance.
The UW Information Technology (UW-IT) Assistant Director of Finance is a strategic leadership position responsible for oversight of the finance team functions for UW Information Technology. This position requires a high level of collaboration, the ability to understand the complex funding, pricing, and overhead models and the ability to lead the team through a time of significant change. Collaboration between this position and the other key leaders in UW-IT is critical as well as collaboration with the central University Financial Management team.
The Assistant Director of Finance position requires a professional with experience in sophisticated business operating environments, possessing a full range of leadership, change management and technical skills necessary to support the financial management processes of a large computing organization within a major public university. The ability to translate abstract concepts into tangible reports that can be explained to non-financial people is essential.
Understanding of budgeting, service costing, and accounting concepts and all the various ways transactions are recorded is necessary to this job, as is a thorough knowledge of the very complex UW-IT business, cost accounting and budget models.
Solid understanding of data management, queries, and transforms to support Ad-Hoc budget and reporting methods.
DUTIES BREAKOUT: Oversee Budgeting, Financial Reporting, and Rate Setting functions for UW-IT: (70%) Hands-On Financial Report Development (20%) Support transition to new systems (10%)
Bachelor’s Degree in Finance, Accounting, Business or Related Field
Five or more years supervising and managing a diverse workforce
Demonstrated experience supervising a finance team
Experience managing complex financial operations including budgeting, reporting, and cost-accounting/rate-setting
Experience developing ad-hoc financial reports in a stand-alone environment (excel, access, etc.)
Ability to work in a fast paced information technology environment
Excellent data management skills in Excel, Access, and/or related applications
Demonstrated excellent written/oral communication skills, technical documentation skills, user liaison skills and personal interaction abilities
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
Experience supervising and managing a finance team
Experience in higher education or a large research institution
Experience managing finances of large technology organization
Experience with UW Administrative Systems (Workday, Ariba, Data-Warehouse, ASTRA, etc.)
Familiarity with Federal Cost Standards, Circular A-21
