Associate or Full Professor and Chair of Industrial Design
Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:
The Department of Industrial Design in the College of Design at Iowa State University is seeking a dynamic and accomplished leader, with an interest in collaborative and interdisciplinary design education, to join the faculty in the role of Department Chair at the rank of associate or professor with tenure. This position is a full-time (B-base, 9 month) appointment with a standard additional month of salary support during the summer. Additional summer support is negotiable.
The Chair is the designated executive officer of the department and is responsible for leadership and oversight of central departmental administrative operations. In this capacity, the chair serves at the pleasure of the Dean of the College of Design. The Industrial Design department is seeking candidates with a passion for design education and professional commitment to excellence that supports all three dimensions of the land-grant mission: education, research/creative inquiry, and outreach.
Â Â Â -Articulate departmental mission, values and interests, within the University and beyond; Â Â Â -Supervise curricular development and teaching, overseeing program assessment and accreditation; Â Â Â -Manage the departmental budget, personnel and governance; Â Â Â -Maintain and enhance inter-disciplinary connections with other College/University programs; as well as with communities, professionals and other internal relations (alumni, donors and industry partners); Â Â Â -Support college/department/university efforts in recruitment, marketing, communication, and fundraising; Â Â Â -Actively promote and expand the reach of industrial design across the state, increasing national recognition of the program and our graduates; Â Â Â -Represent department and college at professional organizations and/or academic symposia; Â Â Â -Engage in research, scholarship and teaching activities; Â Â Â -Advise students and mentor faculty and administrative staff; Â Â Â -Understand tenure and advancement requirements at university-level, as to guide both tenure and advancement review processes.
Required Minimum Qualifications:
Â Â Â -Masterâs degree in product/industrial design and/or other related fields. Â Â Â -Professional accomplishment in [Industrial] Design, in research/creative inquiry and/or industry/practice.
Â Â Â -PhD in product/industrial design or design-related fields and/or allied fields. Â Â Â -Demonstrated experience in academic administration and/or supervisory experience, including fiscal and personnel management. Â Â Â -A successful record of funded research and/or professional experience. Â Â Â -Active engagement in transdisciplinary collaborations.
Department/Program & College Description:
The Department of Industrial Design was formed in 2010 as part of the Collegeâs expansion plan and endeavor to create the most comprehensive college of design in the region. The department was formed with a vision to bridge the intersections between design academics, practitioners and end-users, by exploring new models, tools and modes of working that strengthen design practice, improve social and growth development and build a world-class learning environment. The department includes 7 tenured/tenure track faculty, 9 term faculty, and approximately 181 undergraduate and 14 graduate students. The Industrial Design program offers a Bachelors in Industrial Design (BID) and a Master in Industrial Design (MID). Both the undergraduate and graduate programs are accredited. The undergraduate program includes cross-disciplinary integration, minors, industry sponsored projects, and a study abroad and internship program. The program has established strategic collaborations with other highly-ranked colleges and departments, such as mechanical engineering, apparel design and business. The Industrial Design department offers an integrated and concurrent program that leads to a BID and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree.
