“PLUTO – Program for Lung Cancer Screening and Tobacco Cessation” is a five-year research project. Lung cancer screening with low dose CT scans is now recommended for millions of smokers. We propose to use a novel research tool, sequential, multiple assignment, randomized trials (SMARTs), to rigorously test different year-long sequences of tobacco treatment in patients participating in lung cancer screening, including plans for those who respond both incompletely and completely to first-line treatment. Current smokers who are eligible for lung cancer screening will be identified using the electronic medical record at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis VA, and Allina Health.
The candidate for this position will have the responsibility of providing telephone-based smoking cessation coaching and data collection for a large, 3-site NCI-funded randomized controlled trial.
This position is a part-time, 20 hours per week.
Job Duties & Responsibilities 90% - Tobacco Cessation Coaching • Provide participant-centered, evidenced-based tobacco cessation coaching. • Attend training sessions, weekly staff meetings, feedback/coaching sessions. • Apply learning from coaching and training into interventions with participants. • Ensure compliance with human subjects, HIPAA, participant consent, and study personnel training requirements and other regulations. • Maintain call schedule and follow call protocols.
10% - Data Collection • Administration of study data collection process: conduct data collection via in person interviews, telephone interviews, and medical record review. • Perform data entry in REDCap, and ensure accurate data reporting. • Schedule data collection interviews according to the protocol. • Prepare and ship recruitment or other study materials to participants. • Assess, troubleshoot, and report problems with data collection or other research processes.
Required Qualifications: (Must be documented on application materials) 1) Bachelor's degree in psychology, sociology, public health, clinical research, counseling, or a health-related field; OR equivalent combination of education and experience to total four years. 2) Proficiency with Microsoft Word and comfortable navigating electronic databases. 3) Strong oral and written communication skills in English 4) Documented/demonstrated excellent interpersonal skills
Preferred Qualifications 1) Excellent organizational skills with attention to detail. 2) Able to work independently. 3) Proven track record of reliability. 4) Experience with REDCAP software. 5) Previous use of Motivational Interviewing. 6) Prior quantitative research experience including clinical trials research involving direct patient contact, data collection, and/or scheduling study visits is highly desirable. 6) Previous experience providing interventions in health behavior change programs.
