The Department of Medicine, Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine is seeking a, 75% FTE, Assistant Clinical Research Coordinator (ACRC)/lab research hybrid position to coordinate and maintain the blood banking project as well as participate in data gathering for clinical trial registries for the pulmonary hypertension service. The ACRC is expected to obtain consent, then collect and processes blood samples from patients during clinic and hospital visits. The ACRC is also expected to consent and gather clinical data for clinical trial registries as well as take subjects thru clinical visits and procedures.
The ACRC will work with two PIs, who are investigators in a National Network that recruits patients listed for lung transplantation that have pulmonary hypertension. The National Network involves first, the collection of clinical data and blood samples at the time of clinic visits. Then at the time of lung transplantation the ACRC will work with the team of laboratory personnel that procures the lungs that are removed from the patients. The lungs are subjected to extensive processing of tissue samples and cell collections for research purposes. Samples are shipped to various centers across the country. These studies will require that the ACRC be on an on-call roster with the team that collects the lungs when the patients come to lung transplant. The ACRC, will be responsible for various laboratory procedures and these include mouse genotyping, real-time PCR analyses, ELISAs, western immunoblots, and preparation of samples for microarrays to assess quantitative changes in gene and protein
Perform clerical duties in the preparation of regulatory documents. Maintain all forms and documents, including consent forms and master subject logs. File all appropriate correspondence.
Assist with the screening, recruiting, and obtaining consent of study participants. Review medical records and/or perform telephone or in-person interviews to gather data, as needed.
Extract data from source documents for research studies as directed. Collect data and complete case report forms.
Perform basic measurements and tests on patients according to protocol, such as obtaining vital signs and performing phlebotomy and EKG, after appropriate training/certification. Collect study specimens according to protocol.
Prepare, process, and ship specimens/samples accurately under well-defined requirements.
Order and maintain equipment and supplies.

Bachelor's degree in molecular biology, cell biology, biochemistry, or related field.
Two + years of relevant laboratory work experience.
Basic knowledge in biological sciences, cell and molecular biology is critical.
Working knowledge of the main techniques used in molecular biology and cell biology, and the ability to trouble shoot these techniques. These techniques include quantitative RT-PCR analyses, western immunoblots, ELISAs, gene expression (microarray) and proteomic analyses.
Able to work independently in preparing experimental protocols, and adept in the analysis of the relevant scientific literature and in the interpretation of experimental results.
Strong computer skills - MS Word, Excel, Power Point
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Demonstrated ability to take initiative and work as a team-player or independently
Must be detail-oriented and have strong problem-solving and organizational skills
Must be flexible and cooperative to field and appropriately prioritize requests from supervisor, faculty, fellows, and staff; demonstrated ability to follow through with projects and manage deadlines well
Flexible to work outside of standard business hours if/when dictated by the time of tissue procurement.
Excellent interaction skills necessary in working with patients and in obtaining informed consent.
Knowledge of lung biology.
Experience with phlebotomy.
Familiarity with preparing results for publication.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):
Two-year college degree and one year of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of experience, education, and training.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):
General knowledge of medical terminology.
CERTIFICATIONS & LICENSES:
Working toward certification(s) to perform basic patient measurements and tests, such as phlebotomy and EKG.
Frequently stand, walk, twist, bend, stoop, squat and use fine light/fine grasping.
Occasionally sit, reach above shoulders, perform desk based computer tasks, use a telephone and write by hand, lift, carry, push, and pull objects that weigh up to 40 pounds.
Rarely kneel, crawl, climb ladders, grasp forcefully, sort and file paperwork or parts, rarely lift, carry, push, and pull objects that weigh 40 pounds or more.
