This position is full-time and works approximately 37.5 hours per week. This position is time-limited for up to one year. The field work schedule is weather-dependent and may include weekends and evenings.
The Adalsteinsson lab at Tyson Research Center seeks an enthusiastic technician with strong interests in avian ecology and parasitology to manage seasonal crew members and lead field and laboratory data collection efforts. The ideal candidate will have experience collecting and identifying ticks; operating mist nets and handling passerine birds; and be willing to learn new field methods and population monitoring techniques. This temporary position is based at Tyson Research Center, Washington University’s field station (tyson.wustl.edu). The person in this position will manage and help mentor undergraduate and high school students over 11 weeks (late May – early August) and spend the duration of the position assisting with a variety of research tasks (e.g., training, preparing for summer crew, field work and data collection for ongoing projects).
There will be opportunities to co-author posters, presentations, and potentially manuscripts, depending on individual’s interest/engagement with student projects. The technician will also have the opportunity to participate in professional development experiences offered throughout the student fellowship program such as career panels and statistics workshops. From late May through early August, Tyson Research Center hosts a dynamic community of 80+ students (high school through graduate level), postdocs, technicians, faculty, staff, and other researchers. PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
This position will contribute to long-term research, monitoring, and restoration projects that include: examining the effects of prescribed fire on tick-borne disease ecology; studying the impact of urbanization on mammals in the St. Louis metro area; monitoring populations of indicator species at Tyson Research Center; and assisting/training students on conservation projects.
Data collection involves:
Assist with sampling of ticks using dry-ice baited traps and dragging and flagging methods.
Capture passerine birds, blood sampling, and remove ticks from birds.
Estimate mammal abundance using pellet counts and camera traps.
Identify ticks under the microscope.
Measure leaf litter.
Survey bats with visual and acoustic data.
