Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking an Associate Director of Trademark Licensing, Merchandising and Management for the Department of University Communications and Marketing. This position is under the direction of the Senior Director of Brand and Marketing within the Department of University Communications and Marketing. The position is directly responsible for the university’s trademark licensing program, including: managing the Federal trademark registrations of the Rutgers name and other official wordmarks and logos, granting external entities licenses to use Rutgers trademarks and ensuring approved licensees adhere to university standards.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
Develops and implements strategies to maximize the revenue earned through royalties on branded merchandise sales
Monitors and analyzes data to predict market trends
Develops, reviews, and implements policies, processes and guidelines related to use of the university trademarks buy internal and external parties.
Provides reports to senior leadership and guidance to the Rutgers community regarding the licensing program, proper use of registered university marks, and other issues or concerns regarding trademarks, suppliers, vendors and community concerns.
Works closely with the General Counsel’s office, outside counsel, Athletics, University Procurement Services and within the Department of University Communications and Marketing.
Maintains an up-to-date and expert understanding of the strategies used to promote branded merchandise and develop relationships with colleagues at other Universities.
Works with licensed vendors to guide their interactions with the university and to ensure corporate responsibility.
Reviews and approves designs and artwork submissions.
Acts as the liaison with Rutgers units, licensing agent and licensees to promote the strategic use of Rutgers' marks.
Minimum Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in communication, marketing, business, or related field.
A minimum of five (5) years’ experience working with trademark licensing, management or marketing programs in a higher education, corporate, or non-profit setting.
At least two (2) years’ experience in a supervisory or managerial role.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of federal trademark law and registration requirements.
Understanding of the components of successful marketing programs and product development.
Excellent verbal and written communications skills. Excellent presentation and client relation skills.
Must be organized, detail-oriented with strong planning and problem-solving skills.
Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
Must be diplomatic, tactful, and able to maintain confidentiality.
Critical thinker and creative problem solver, and able to stay informed of news events, popular culture, higher education, retail trends, and trademark, global corporate responsibility and copyright issues.
Ability to work autonomously and as a team member and team leader.
Ability to work independently and effectively under pressure and able to manage workload in order to meet deadlines.
Use of personal vehicle in order to travel for business demands; a valid driver's license would be required for this position.
Experience in retail merchandise and/or program marketing also desired.
