The West Tennessee AgResearch and Education Center at Jackson (WTREC) is a 647-acre field laboratory that supports the research, teaching, and outreach activities of faculty, research associates and graduate students of The University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture (UTIA). WTREC is one of three University of Tennessee Gardens known collectivity as the State Botanical Gardens of Tennessee.
The position provides advanced technical support to the agricultural research operations in the Ornamental Horticulture Program at WTREC/UT Gardens Jackson. WTREC supports the University's role in horticultural research in the areas of cultivar selections, landscape design, establishment, as well as maintenance of display gardens, disease, and insect control. Trials also include field studies of unreleased experimental cultivars. This mission requires the oversight of an individual with increased technical and supervisory capabilities.
RESPONSIBILITIES: The Research Coordinator will conduct research experiments, formulate experimental procedures and protocols, record, and compile analytical research data. They will assist the Research Associate and the WTREC Center Director in the planning of experiments and the development of test procedures. The position will be responsible for identifying pests and diseases, formulating a course of action, mixing and administering the proper fungicides, insecticides, herbicide, and calibrate and maintain all chemical application equipment. The person will manage fertilization, plant growing schedules, maintain and operate the greenhouse environmental control systems. The job requires the interpretation of data, the development of conclusions, and will contribute to the development and presentation of written and oral reports. He/she will assist in disseminating conclusions through public events, garden tours, WTREC's field days, social media, plant sales, and Master Gardener programs.
The Research Coordinator will work closely with the Research Associate, students, interns, seasonal workers, and volunteers. They will also coordinate the work activity of student workers, interns, and volunteers as required and will assume the role and responsibilities of the Research Associate in his/her absence. This position works mostly outdoors with occasional office responsibilities and must be able to work in hot, cold, wet etc. conditions.
This position occasionally will be required to work weekends, evenings as well as some travel with overnight stay.
Research Coordinator reports directly to the Research Associate and WTREC Center Director and will perform other duties as assigned.
