Provide clinic support - clinical (taking patient vital signs and reason for visit for appointments) and non-clinical areas (appointment scheduling, chart preparation, room preparation. logs of infectious disease reports, contacting patients for follow-up of ER visits, taking phone messages for RN's, MD's, disinfecting and sterilizing equipment, stocking rooms and managing inventory. Prohibited activities: giving medications or immunizations, patient treatments, calling in prescriptions, giving lab reports to patients, counseling or giving medical advice.
Preparation of patients (vital signs including temperature, pulse, respiratory rate, blood pressure, height, weight, peak expiratory flow rate, pulse oximetry, Snellen eye screen, women's health history and brief reason for visit note.). Completes list of medication allergies and notes medications patient is currently taking. Paper charts now in use; expect transition to EHR soon;) checking that appropriate lab results, forms are in chart, specimen labels needed are present; consent or patient instruction forms are in chart; assists patients as their condition dictates in moving from one area to another - use of wheelchair or walking with a patient to another department; on occasion may accompany patient to Evanston Hospital transport of specimens to lab; delivers faxes or lab results to pracitioners as needed may act as chaperone for some portions of examination of female patients as requested by a practitioner keeping rooms supplied and maintained for patient use - equipment and linens stocked; biohazard containers and sharps containers emptied; surfaces and exam tables properly disinfected; practitioner lab coats available, reports inventory needs to supply clerk; special requests of practitioners noted and filled. Washing and appropriate sterilizing or disinfecting of equipment required. Works with laundry person to maintain schedule which ensure adequate linen inventory. Recognizes medically urgent or emergent situations and communicates appropriately with nurse or physician.
Follow-up of recall patients (contacts patients who are due to return for follow up of abnormal tests or due for a sequence of visits,) contact, log and record patients seen in emergency room and patients hospitalized, infectious disease reporting by fax and via internet system to state health department, missed appointments follow up and notification of charges,
Assists physicians, nurses, health service assistants as needed and within scope of position
Answering incoming calls directed to clinic, provides general HS information to all callers, clinic scheduling with PyraMED database with special attention to women's health scheduling, clinic preparation of patient records for upcoming visits - forms present, labels as providers request, special needs noted; eligibility checked,

High school diploma, graduation from accredited school of medical assisting, current certification from American Association of Medical Assistants, current basic CPR certification.
Demonstrated competence (references to include specific skill performance) in ambulatory medical care setting
Completion of extern/internship with ambulatory healthcare facility as part of training;
2 years experience in ambulatory internal medicine or medical sub-specialty practice
