BCMT is a center of expertise for the magnetic-systems science and engineering, providing vital underpinnings for many aspects of the DOE office of Science mission. Physicist Postdoc to perform work within the Berkeley Center for Magnet Technology (BCMT) as a key member of a team consisting of physicists, engineers, technologists and students.
You will support BCMT research and projects by developing multi-physics simulation and analysis tools for applications of advanced superconducting cables and magnets in high-energy physics and fusion research. Research topics of interest for this position include, but are not limited to: Current sharing in high temperature superconducting (HTS) cables, quench protection of HTS magnets and LTS/HTS hybrid configurations, multi-scale mechanics of superconducting magnets, and failure modeling of materials and interfaces in superconducting magnets. We further expect the successful applicant to contribute to the experimental design, testing and analysis of cable and magnet systems that can provide credible data to validate the simulation and analysis tools.
What You Will Do:
Develop advanced simulation tools for the analysis of mechanical, electromagnetic and multi-physics problems in the area of superconducting magnets.
Work closely with cable and magnet development team to develop multi-physics simulation (with a focus on mechanics and electromagnetics) tools in support of BCMT research programs and projects on advanced superconducting cables and magnets.
Participate in the development and testing of novel advanced superconducting cable and magnet systems. Contribute to magnet test planning, execution, and data analysis.
Contribute to the analysis and understanding of performance limitations of prototype superconducting cables and magnets.
Take responsibility for specific project tasks with milestones and deliverables.
Work closely with project leads to identify critical tasks and produce results on schedule.
Conduct original research independently and in collaborations.
Document findings, procedures and results from the research, development, and test. Present results at collaboration meetings, seminars, workshops and conferences and publish in refereed journals.
What is Required:
Ph.D. in Mechanics, Computational Physics, Applied Mathematics, or other relevant fields.
Strong knowledge of numerical methods in science and engineering.
Strong knowledge of a computational language/environment (such as Fortran or C), high level languages (such as Matlab or Python).
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
Ability to work effectively in a team that includes engineers, scientific staff, technicians, and students.
Relevant publication record and demonstration of proficient written and oral presentation of scientific results.
Familiarity with superconductivity and the properties of superconducting materials.
Strong experience in data analysis.
Experience with parallel computing.
Experience using commercial finite element analysis software (such as ANSYS, Opera, or COMSOL).
Ability to mentor students.

This is a full-time 2-year postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 3 years paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.

Salary will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates.
