The Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition, Department of Medicine, at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) and VA Pittsburgh Health Care System, are seeking Inflammatory Bowel Disease-focused physician-scientists at the level of Assistant, Associate or Full Professor. The Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition was ranked as one of the "Top 5" Digestive Centers in the Nation (U.S. News and World Report, July 2012) and continues to be nationally recognized for its clinical and academic service. The Gastroenterology program at University Drive campus of the VA Pittsburgh system, adjacent to the University of Pittsburgh campus, supports the national, independent liver transplant center and is a nationally recognized center for clinical excellence and health research. The successful candidate should be board certified or eligible in ABIM Gastroenterology, and possess or be eligible for a medical license in the State of Pennsylvania. The clinical and research environment for contributing to advances in understanding and managing inflammatory bowel disease is extraordinary. The UPMC Inflammatory Bowel Disease Center is one of the largest and most innovative clinical IBD programs in the United States, including the first "IBD medical home" model, and pioneering work in telemedicine and personalized medicine. In education, the IBD LIVE conference is now nationally syndicated. Research strengths at the University of Pittsburgh that contribute to a rich environment for multidisciplinary IBD-related research include one of six NIDDK IBD Genetics Consortium Genetic Research Centers; selection as a vanguard site for the CCFA's IBD Plexus Prospective Clinical Cohort project; a new Center for Microbiome in Medicine in the Department of Medicine; a growing Department of Immunology; clinical-translational programs in post-operative care and outcomes, severity indicators, cancer risk, surgical approaches, medication effects and clinical trials; and initiatives in advancing Big Data Science, including on of 11 NIH-funded Big Data Knowledge (BD2K) Centers of Excellence for Big Data Computing and the new Pittsburgh Health Data Alliance, a collaboration by Carnegie Mellon University, the University of Pittsburgh, and UPMC to leverage big data for healthcare breakthroughs. The UPMC IBD Registry maintains prospectively curated comprehensive observational natural history data and metadata on >2,500 consented patients, facilitating immediate implementation of clinical/translational studies integrated with this fully functioning relational database. Expanded research opportunities exist with the richness of multiple collaborative departments and institutes in areas of epithelial cell biology, immunology, mucosal immunology and inflammation, regenerative medicine, pain, genetics, pharmacogenetics, genomics, microbiome, epidemiology, phenotyping, oncogenesis, systems biology, drug discovery, clinical trials and others. VA Pittsburgh Health Care System is one of the Nations pre-eminent VA facilities. The GI section offers a full breadth of clinical services including therapeutic Endoscopy and transplant Hepatology. Performing close to 6000 procedures a year it boasts a new state of the art endoscopy unit with 5 general endoscopy rooms and 2 fluoroscopy suites. The GI section has a strong track record of research in pancreatic disease supported by VA CDAs and Merit reviews, and is committed to and desires the development of a strong academic IBD group to treat our veterans with IBD. The candidate is expected to be a well-respected academic gastroenterologist who is published in one or more IBD-related scientific disciplines. The candidate should also be currently funded or demonstrate great potential for developing a well-funded research program in an area directly related to IBD form NIH, VA or other agencies. Experience in proficient care of patients with intestinal disease is desirable.
