The incumbent will use established standard operating procedures to receive and process tissue specimens. The work on the specimen is independent and judgment is required to assure the accuracy of the tissue section quality per the Pathologist specification. Incumbent is responsible for following all safety and quality protocol and knowing what to do in the event of an occurrence. Position is supervised by the lab manager but serves as a resource for students, residents, faculty and staff. Incumbent will use Histotechnologist management theories and educational methodologies while training new employees and students. Responsible for resolving specimen related issues from lower level Histotech positions. The incumbent will have regular contact with physicians, research personnel and other miscellaneous personnel. This contact provides information relative to testing results, inquisitions into specimen integrity, and advice and recommendations concerning specimen collection and slide preparation.
Perform all necessary duties and procedures required for the processing of human and/or animal tissue specimens for diagnostic, teaching, and research purposes. This includes highly complex and intricate procedures and techniques requiring expertise, knowledge, and skill beyond the average technical level. Demonstrates knowledge of the scientific principles involved in the diagnostic procedures. Responsible for training and educating new employees and students on standard operation procedures and laboratory protocol. Assist in researching and developing new procedures and techniques for diagnostic purposes. Responsible for problem solving and resolving specimen related issues from lower level Histotech positions. Demonstrate knowledge of neurohistology and related techniques as well as immunohistochemistry.
Duties and Responsibilities:
* Prepares tissue specimens for paraffin sectioning, frozen sections, or other appropriate methods for diagnostic, teaching, and research. Including: Routine and specialized sectioning and cutting of tissue. Non-standard size sectioning and cutting of tissue and tissue blocks. Preparation of slides. Both routine and developmental histochemical and immunohistochemically stains.
* Prepares human and animal tissue for high complexity testing, as well as, microtomy which involves fixation, dehydration, processing, decalcification, embedding, glycol methacrylates, enzyme histochemical staining, biochemistry staining, and machine maintenance. Receives and logs cases. Organizes and stores fixed and frozen tissue. Prepares and maintains reagents.
* Responsible for training and educating new employees and students on standard operation procedures and laboratory protocol using Histotechnologist management theories and educational methodologies. Assist employees and students with the selection of specific staining techniques for diagnostic purposes and provide technical advice and information as needed. Assist in researching and developing new procedures and techniques for diagnostic purposes. Problem solve, and resolve and work through abnormal findings or issues found and reported by the lower Histotech positions.
* Change or modify procedures to demonstrate specific cellular or tissue components of diagnostic importance. Maintains guidelines and standard operating procedures. Maintains regulatory compliance and quality control. Produces letters and documentation as well as other duties as assigned.

ASCP Certified Histotechnologist (HTL).
Ability to follow standard operating procedures and testing techniques. Proficiency at computer entry and experience with database entry. Analytical skills to make quantitative and qualitative observations. Ability to maintain accurate and legible records. Self-driven and able to function both independently and as well as a part of a team. Ability to perform physically demanding and repetitive tasks. Ability to handle constant interruptions. Ability to handle stressful environments and adapt to change. Ability to handle concurrent tasks. Continuous self- directed learning to stay current with developments in the field. Ability to effectively communicate and exchange information.
