SCI-Office of the Dean - Pennsylvania-Pittsburgh - (19008419)
The Institute for Modeling and Managing Complicated Systems (Momacs) has a full-time staff opening for a Research Software Engineer (RSE). At Momacs, computing and information technologies help humans to gather data and assemble and test models of unimaginable scale and fidelity, far exceeding anything that can be done by humans working alone. Momacs fosters collaboration among computational and domain experts and intelligent machines, pushing the boundaries of systems science and technology with each new project.
The RSE will play a key role in developing the software fundamental to the mission of Momacs. Existing Pitt software systems such as PRAM and OCCAM, and systems from colleagues elsewhere such as INDRA and Eidos, will be brought into one framework (the "Modeling Stack") and maintained. The RSE will work closely with researchers and other partners in identifying needs for the modeling stack, design its architecture, carry out implementation, develop software tests, and prepare documentation. The RSE will assist in developing training materials and presentations about the modeling stack and associated research using it. Experience with modeling, simulation and agile software development, including testing, is required. Experience in research in an academic environment, educational design, computer systems and web-based computing is preferred. Software development experience in machine learning, natural language text processing and/or data systems is desired.
The RSE will interact and attend meetings with stakeholders from the Momacs community, requiring interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to prepare and deliver technical presentations at professional meetings. The RSE will work independently to accomplish project tasks. A Master's degree in Computer Science or a related field is required, PhD preferred. 10+ years of experience in full-stack software development and 5+ in interdisciplinary scientific research practices is preferred.
A background in scientific research methods, simulation and modeling, computational experiments, full-stack software development and user-interface design is required.

One of three state-related research universities in Pennsylvania, Pitt is a member of the Association of American Universities (AAU), which comprises 62 preeminent doctorate-granting research institutions in North America.Pitt faculty members have expanded knowledge in the humanities and sciences, earning such prestigious honors as the National Medal of Science, the MacArthur Foundation’s “genius” grant, the Lasker-DeBakey Clinical Medical Research Award, and election to the National Academy of Sciences and the Institute of Medicine. Pitt scientists have defeated polio, unlocked the secrets of DNA, lead the world in organ transplantation, and pioneered TV and heavier-than-air flight, among numerous other accomplishments.Pitt students have earned Rhodes, Goldwater, Marshall, and Truman Scholarships, among other highly competitive national and international scholarships.Alumni have pioneered MRI and TV, won Nobel and Pulitzer Prizes, led corporations and universities, served in government and the military, conquered Hollywood and The New York Times bestsellers list, and won Super Bowls and NBA championships.
