The Lowenstein Laboratory in the Department of Neurosurgery and the Department of Cell and Developmental Biology is accepting applications for a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow. The successful candidate will join an exciting and productive team focused on elucidating the molecular mechanisms that mediate innate immunity in genetically engineered mouse glioma models. The project will investigate the reprograming of the tumor microenvironment and the response to novel immune-based therapeutics. The project will also study pathways originating from the tumor cells and mediated by miRNAs which interact with and modulate the activity of innate immune cells. The project also has a strong translational component to develop and implement novel therapeutics in human clinical trials for brain cancer; these include immune mediated gene therapy strategies, siRNA therapeutics, small molecules and nanotechnologies. The lab is utilizing several different types of gene therapy and exploring ways to translate the research into novel therapies for adult and pediatric brain tumors.
The applicant will play an active role in the design, execution and outcome assessment of the research studies. The successful applicant will develop and conduct complex experiments related to the analysis of innate immune mechanisms, coupled to next generation sequencing and bioinformatics analysis. He/she will provide input into the development of procedures and research design, and review results with supervisors. The selected candidate will be responsible for accurate scientific research, documentation of results and evaluation/analysis of data. The applicant will provide laboratory support and keep accurate records of laboratory plasmid, bacterial and cell stocks. He/she will also contribute to the preparation of grants to NIH and foundations under the supervision of Dr. Lowenstein, and will compile information for posters, abstracts, papers and reviews. Participation in weekly lab meetings, including presentation of data, is required.
PhD in Immunology or Biochemistry or Neuroscience and 3-5 years of experience in a research laboratory. Knowledge of flow cytometry, functional immune assays, bioinformatics analysis, including data analysis of RNA-seq, and ChIP-seq of specific histone marks. Excellent decision making and the ability to assume responsibility for a substantial portion of the research project. Experience conducting experiments independently or with supervision and with a broad spectrum of laboratory techniques such as ChIP-seq, RNA-seq, bioinformatic analysis tools, molecular biology, immunocytochemistry, transfection, cell culture, neurosurgery techniques in rodents, confocal microscopy, in vivo delivery of gene transfer platforms into the brain, qPCR, cytokine array and ELISA. The applicant must also have excellent written and oral communication skills, and knowledge of Microsoft Office, Power Point, Prism, relevant statistical analytical tools, Photo Shop and Illustrator. A strong background in mathematics, physics, and/or bioengineering will also be a plus.
