The Preuss School UCSD is a public Charter School located on the UCSD East Campus for Grades 6-12 dedicated to providing a rigorous college-prep education for motivated low-income students who will become the first in their families to graduate from college. As part of UCSD, The Preuss School also serves as a model school to study and develop best practices in the preparation of low-income, urban students for college admission.
The Preuss School UCSD provides students with the opportunity to compete in quality athletic competition at the high school level. We believe that athletic participation is an integral part of the total educational program. We provide experiences beyond the school classroom curriculum where participants learn sportsmanship, teamwork, commitment and leadership.
The Sports Coach will provide instruction in non-credited recreational or sports activities to participants of all ages. The Sports Coach will apply full knowledge and experience in recreational sports activities to create and adjust program methods and processes and provides safe instruction to participants. The incumbent will supervise up to 30 students, coordinate and promote all phases of the athletic team and program. Must possess a comprehensive knowledge of the sport and previous coaching experience. Goals are to improve the individual fundamental skill and athletic fitness of the players, and the team skill and strategy necessary to achieve a degree of individual and team success.
Within the framework of the athletic program, the coach provides leadership to ensure each student-athlete will achieve a full and productive experience. Responsible for practices and games on weekdays and possibly on weekends as necessary. The Sports Coach is expected to have strong verbal and written communication skills; the ability to communicate effectively with parents, school staff and community members; excellent interpersonal and organizational skills; and superior leadership and supervisory skills. Must engage in the ongoing development and improvement of coaching skills and is expected to take the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) online coaching and concussion course.

High School Diploma or equivalent. Two to three (2 - 3) years of experience in coaching.
Working knowledge of program activity practices and procedures. Specialized knowledge of program activity and industry best practices. Knowledge of university policies and procedures.
Basic skills in computer programs relevant to job duties.
Client service minded, entrepreneurial spirit and creative thinking skills.
Leadership and interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively across the organization, internally and externally.
Strong verbal and written communication skills in the English language, active listening, critical thinking, multi-tasking, time management skills, and dynamic flexibility in adapting needs of clients.
Proven ability to exercise independent sound judgment and employ reasoning skills.
Experience with low-income diverse student population preferred.
FBI/DOJ Live Scan background check required.
Tuberculosis (TB) screening required.
Must have a valid California Driver's License.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS
Current CPR Certification.
Standard First Aid Certification.
Certification to instruct in the applicable recreational sports program or equivalent experience preferred.
Duties will require direct contact with children (defined as individuals under the age of 18); completion of the Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act (CANRA) form is required.
