Job Summary: The Research Engineer uses fundamental concepts, practices, and procedures of a particular field of specialization to perform varied scientific research requiring application and adaptation of established techniques, procedures, and criteria. Will evaluate, select, and apply standard scientific techniques, procedures, and criteria to accomplish a variety of research assignments. May be involved in various research projects to include conducting experiments, writing research proposals, writing technical papers and research reports.
Additional Department Summary: The successful applicant will have excellent communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with others. He/she will be expected to supervise parallel experiments in the laboratories, train students in the use of equipment including hydraulic actuators, strain gages, load cells, LVDT's, data acquisition hardware and data acquisition software (e.g. LabView or similar), as well as help design experimental setups and breakdown. The ability to read technical drawings and to direct machine shop staff is also necessary. The laboratory technician will also have laboratory safety responsibilities which will include serving as the safety manager and providing training for users as needed. The successful applicant must have the ability to work in a structures and materials laboratory which may require some lifting and other physical activities related to test setup and breakdown such as using a person lift and positioning heavy equipment. While not required, the ability to set up dynamic hybrid tests for seismic testing of large-scale structural specimens is desirable.
Required Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree relevant field of study and at least four years of related experience or an approved combination of education and experience in which comparable knowledge, skills, and abilities have been attained. Knowledge in standard software applications. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Organization and detailed oriented. Approved Equivalencies: (1) Bachelor's degree in an unrelated field of study and at least five years of related experience; OR (2) Master's degree in a relevant field of study and at least two years of related experience; OR (3) All But a Dissertation; OR (4) Doctoral Degree.
Additional Required Department Minimum Qualifications: Must have valid U.S. driver's license. Must be at least 21 years of age at time of hire and have an acceptable Motor Vehicle Report as determined by the insurance carrier.
Preferred Qualifications: Prefer at least two years of experience working in an engineering laboratory.
