The ideal candidate will maintain a vigorous research program and collaborate with researchers at the NSCL, both in theory and experiment, and would dedicate at least 50% of their time to reactions relevant to rare isotope science. The Fellowship, the NSCL and the MSU campus offer a variety of advantages in building a successful career, including the prestige of the Fellowship, a large and vigorous research group, a travel budget and access to the MSU High Performance Computing Center.
The P. Gregers Hansen Fellowship is a 2-yr position with the possibility of renewal for up to 3 years. The successful candidate must demonstrate great promise for high scientific achievement in the science of nuclear reactions. It is expected that the Fellowship will help the candidate to advance into open faculty or permanent staff positions in the field.
The NSCL is one of the world’s flagship nuclear science research centers, both in experiment and theory. As a national user facility funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation, the NSCL provides rare isotope beams for experiments addressing key scientific questions about the creation of isotopes, the limits of nuclear stability and the equation of state of neutron-rich matter. On the theoretical side, research is carried out in nuclear structure, reactions and astrophysics. Effective field theory for nuclei is advanced, and direct and central reactions are modeled as well as mergers of compact astrophysical objects.
NSCL is part of the Facility for Rare Isotope Beam (FRIB) Laboratory, which aspires to become the world’s leading laboratory for education and research in rare isotope science, accelerator science, and in applications of rare isotopes to meet societal needs. To realize this vision, the FRIB Laboratory builds on the expertise and the achievements of the NSCL as it establishes FRIB as a new user facility, supported by the Department of Energy Office of Science, to be completed in 2022. It will vastly expand the range of rare isotope beams available to the research community and offer unprecedented potential for scientific discovery.
Doctorate -Nuclear Theory
Applicants must have a Ph.D. in nuclear theory and demonstrated expertise in the development of transport theory and its application to nuclear reactions.The ability to work with export controlled technologies.
