Under general supervision, the C ontrol Room Operating Engineer controls the operation of the fluidized bed boiler, three gas/oil fired boilers, 6 chillers, emergency generator unit, thermal storage tank, campus electrical demand, and all auxiliary and associated equipment in the plant. S/he follows established procedures and refers sub-standard conditions to supervisor. Reporting to the Shift Supervisor, the Control Room Operating Engineer has additional duties that include but are not limited to:
Maintains constant watch over all operating equipment through monitoring control room instrumentation, computer screen and printout and alarms.
Ensures that the equipment is performing according to prescribed characteristics for a safe and efficient operation in providing steam, chilled water, and electrical services to the central distribution system.
Makes operational changes and adjustments as required to secure safe, efficient and continual operation, participating in repair maintenance and the installation of plant equipment.
Reviews and ensures that control room log readings, plant walkdown sheets boiler, and chilled water reading and analysis's are taken properly by equipment operators.
Makes sure corrective action is taken to chemical treatments as required adjustments to plant equipment.
Reviews operational manuals, technical manuals, and plant procedures.
Requirements and Qualifications
High School Diploma or equivalent
Minimum of five years training or experience in trade practice of steam engineering
Must operate intuitively from previous knowledge in troubleshooting gauges and instruments on equipment to bring about satisfactory operation
Possess a 1st Class DC Steam Engineers License and be capable of understanding and operating complex operation of high pressure steam and chilled water systems which can be operated several ways depending on operational needs
Possess a CFC certification and be capable of interpreting, evaluating, and directing operators to report equipment conditions and actions taken on field equipment by plant personnel
Ability to to perform the duties of the shift supervisor in his absence, having the authority to shut down equipment and call in any personnel to repair, maintain, or resume utility services
Must always report to work on time in the event of severe weather conditions, regardless of whether the University is closed or operating on alternate schedule, and be capable of supporting snow removal operations
