The Senior Research Specialist is part of the Proteomics Core in the Mass Spectrometry Research Center at Vanderbilt University and is a key individual contributor responsible for execution of proteomics workflows. This position reports directly to the Co-Associate Director of the proteomics core.
The mission of the Mass Spectrometry Research Center (MSRC) is to bring state-of-the-art mass spectrometry expertise, methodology, and instrumentation to researchers at Vanderbilt University and Vanderbilt University Medical Center. The MSRC is located on the 9th floor in Medical Research Building III. The MSRC Proteomics Core occupies 3,600 square feet of laboratory space, and has nine LC-MS/MS instruments, including two LTQ ion traps, four Q Exactive Orbitraps, an Orbitrap Velos with ETD, a Waters Xevo with HDX capabilities, and a TSQ Vantage triple quadrupole mass spectrometer. The Proteomics Laboratory provides instrumentation and analytical methods to analyze proteins and proteomes. High performance LC-MS instruments and expertise provide exceptional flexibility in analytical proteomics approaches. Support for the facility comes from service cores affiliated with NIH-funded Program Projects and Research Centers, service fees charged to unaffiliated investigators and direct institutional support from Vanderbilt University.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Execution of proteomics workflows
Follow specific workflows for sample preparation, including protein digestion, peptide labeling, and sample clean-up
Prepare capillary LC columns
Create and apply various data acquisition methods for sample analysis
Perform bioinformatics analysis using software tools for protein identification and quantification, and for identification of post-translational modifications
Daily operation and routine maintenance of state-of-the-art LC-MS/MS instrumentation
Operation of instrument software for instrument calibration and data acquisition
Performance of instrument QA/QC procedures
Provide routine laboratory maintenance
Order supplies for the lab
Independently organize and maintain data and records
Responsible for chemical waste disposal
Profile of an Ideal Candidate:
Bachelor of Science in physical or biological sciences is necessary.
At least two years of post-graduate experience is necessary.
Five years of experience is preferred.
Laboratory experience in proteomics, biochemistry, or analytical chemistry is necessary.
Experience in protein/peptide analysis using nanoflow HPLC - tandem mass spectrometry (nanoLC-MSMS), and mass spectrometry data analysis is preferred.
Experience with cell or molecular biology will also be considered.
Strong organizational skills are necessary.
Strong written and verbal communication skills are necessary.
Ability to learn and assist in development of new protocols in an evolving field is necessary.
