The Henry and Lois Foster Hospital for Small Animals provides 24-hour care for pets 365 days of the year. Since 1979, we have offered high quality medical care, consultation, referral and emergency veterinary services for the care of dogs, cats and exotic pets. In addition, the hospital creates a positive learning experience for Tufts Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine (TCSVM) students with regard to small animal medicine and while also supporting the training of Small Animal Medicine technicians.
The Clinic Float Veterinary Technician provides coverage to all the specialty services (e.g., oncology, neurology, ophthalmology, dermatology, cardiology, ZCAM and/or behavior) and internal medicine service depending upon the daily demands across all these services. This position works in conjunction with primary technicians assigned to each of the specialty services. This position requires the incumbent to learn each department's operations and to be able to support the needs of any of these services without hesitation. Duties will include treatment of medical cases (outpatient & inpatient) and procedural cases (prepping, setting up, assisting, & providing post-procedural medical management), performance of anesthesia for special procedures, technician support of various special procedures and completion of technician appointments/discharges. This position must be able to initiate the patient examination process for each service and round with the clinician on the case. After appropriate training, the incumbent must be able to perform the required diagnostic procedures as requested by the service, instruct veterinary students on topics pertaining to each service, request all appropriate laboratory tests, organize appropriate documentation and maintain proper stocking and cleanliness of exam rooms. The Clinic Float Technician may assist in the ECC section, radiology, anesthesia or hospital wards as determined by supervisor's assessment of the hospital caseload. Hours will include some holidays, evenings and weekends.
* Associate's Degree in Veterinary Technology or a high school diploma (or the equivalent) with at least three years of related experience. * Understanding of medical terminology and familiarity with basic diagnostic testing in veterinary medicine * Ability to prioritize multiple responsibilities for several patients within a busy clinical setting. * Technical abilities such as patient restraint, venipuncture, monitoring and treating patients, blood pressure measurement, ECG monitoring. Willingness to learn new skills to assist with internal medicine and specialty service procedures. * Ability to effectively work as a member of a diverse team. * Basic computer skills including the ability to learn and maintain electronic medical record system and a willingness to learn vocabulary used in specialty services and internal medicine. * Comfort communicating with clients about test results, appointment scheduling, medications, or changes in an animal's clinical condition. Good communication skills to provide outstanding customer service when dealing with clients. * Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. with or without accommodation
* Bachelor's Degree in Veterinary Technology with two or more years of clinical experience * Credentialed as a Certified Veterinary Technician or the potential to become a Certified Veterinary Technician within l year. * Knowledge of various specialty services including equipment, procedural support, surgical support and medications specific to each service a plus * Candidates with a goal to become a Veterinary Technician Specialist in a specialty service or internal medicine will be given preference.
Special Work Schedule Requirements:
* The schedule for this position may include providing University and calendar holiday coverage on a rotating basis. * The schedule for this position may include evening and weekend hours. * The schedule for this position requires flexibility to ensure that adequate patient care is provided without interruption or exception. * This position is considered essential and is therefore required to report to work as scheduled during emergency closings.
