The USC Viterbi School of Engineering and the USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences is seeking an experienced Bio-Electron Microscopy (EM) Senior Scientist to perform collaborative research and training in a shared instrumentation facility, the Core Center of Excellence in Nano Imaging (CNI). Â This core facility, comprised of electron microscopes and associated sample preparation equipment, serves users from physical and life sciences and engineering (www.usc.edu/dept/CEMMA ). Â The position reports to the Directors of the facility.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Assists and trains users in advanced EM techniques and experiments
Collaborates with USC user groups to apply advanced EM methods to address research problems on supported research projects
Processes biological specimens for TEM and SEM
Organizes and coordinates semi-annual symposia/workshops on advanced EM techniques of imaging and analysis, as well as sample preparation techniques
Organizes and performs demonstrations/tutorials for users seeking to apply advanced EM techniques
Develops protocols for performing advanced EM techniques, including training procedures and licensed user tests.
Supports and leads preparation of proposals for new instrumentation for nanocharacterization, ancillary equipment, and specimen instruments for the EM Facility
Supports research proposals that require use of EM Facility.
Stays abreast of and evaluates new developments in instrumentation, techniques, and methods, and informs users through seminars and/or workshops
Develops and implements practices and protocols to ensure that instruments and accessories function properly, capabilities are utilized correctly, and training is performed properly and efficiently
Maintains and calibrates equipment including coordination with operations staff to schedule routine maintenance and basic repairs
Demonstrable experience in TEM and SEM techniques.
Strong EM experience spanning sample preparation (both hard and soft/biological materials) to advanced techniques, including FIB, image filtering, EELS, spectroscopic imaging, tomographic imaging, and STEM microanalysis.Â
Experience with biosafety level 2 procedures
Working knowledge of laboratory safety, chemical safety and handling of blood borne pathogens
Strong verbal and written communication skills
