Essential Job Duties:
This Research Technician position will perform daily research duties associated with projects in the fields of reproductive physiology and molecular biology. The technician will also be expected to complete laboratory experiments. The successful candidate for this position would have excellent bench skills using molecular and cell culture techniques, as well as extensive experiences in management of laboratory mouse colony and statistical analysis of research data. This position will work with multiple professors, students and scientists; therefore, we seek someone who can maintain the team work, is cooperative, and time flexible.
Detailed responsibilities include: Conducting Experiments/Procedures (40%): The position will involve research projects applying animal trial (swine and/or laboratory mouse), cell culture and various biotechniques such as quantitative PCR, western blotting, immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence, subcloning to study gene function associated with implantation and placentation. The position will conduct analytical procedures in the lab and maintain records of research projects, including all protocols and data. Oversee mouse colony including breeding, weaning, and oversee and manage the mouse colony. Oversee the genotyping procedure, and may train new genotypers. Maintain high level of time management skills, proficient in quality control measures, and have an understanding of research grants and proposals. Assist with experimental and laboratory research protocols for several collaborative in-house and external researchers.
Laboratory Management (40%): Incorporate a safer laboratory work by monitoring the operation of analytical equipment while in use by departmental faculty, staff and students. Maintain and troubleshoot analytical laboratory equipment, including equipment logs and laboratory procedure manual. Maintain inventory of research supplies and implement the Lab Safety Plan and proper disposal of lab waste (both hazardous and non-hazardous as well as radioactive) by following EHS hazardous waste and radioactive waste protocols.
Communication (20%): Discuss research from literature and the lab with Principal Investigator with the goal of planning experiments and grant proposal initiatives. Evaluate research findings in literature and be able to criticize experimental approaches taken by ours and other laboratories.
This is a time-limited position with an expected duration of up to 3 years, depending on funding availability

Demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.
Four years of related experience with standard laboratory procedures in molecular biology.
Must have excellent oral and written communication skills.
Must have basic computational skills such as knowledge of Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.

Master of Science degree in Animal Science/Biology or related field is strongly preferred.
Previous working experience with laboratory mouse and swine surgery, as well as publication experience in peer-reviewed journals are desired.
The successful candidate should be self-motivated, well-organized, and able to work as part of a team.
The ideal candidate for this position would have excellent bench skills using physiology, biochemical, molecular, and cell culture techniques, as well as extensive experiences in management of laboratory mouse and/or swine at research farms and statistical analysis of research data.
Required license or certification:
A valid drivers license is required for travel. NC drivers license required within 60 days of hire and must be maintained.
