The Department of Surgery, Cardiothoracic Division at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University is seeking a full-time Physician Assistant. The successful candidate will: - Assessment and management of cardiothoracic patients. - Perform patient histories and physical examinations. - Order and interpret diagnostic lab tests and radiological studies. - Write orders for medications or other various therapies. - Formulate other diagnostic impressions. - Refer to and converse with appropriate consultation services in regard to patient management. - Participate in rounds at the start through end of shift. - Assume all other responsibilities as assigned by the Chief or his/her designee. - Participate in QAPI, Patient Care / Patient Safety, and Special Projects. - Functions as first assistant on cardiac surgery cases - Provides post-operative management of patients in the CTICU - Assists in preparation and pre-operative management of cardiothoracic patients. - Adheres to STS imperatives including pre-op medication management (pre-op BB admin, antibiotic dosing/timing, withholding ACE/ARBs, withholding nephrotoxins) - Assist with chest tube placement. - IABP management. - Impella LVAD/RVAD management. - ECMO. - Must be able to work variable and flexible shifts. (DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES ARE NOT LIMITED TO THE ABOVE POSITION DESCRIPTION) QUALIFICATIONS: - NYS Licensure and current registration as a Physician Assistant. - Bachelor's Degree from an accredited physician's assistant program. - BLS & ACLS Certification. - A minimum of 1-year of experience in critical care required. - Experience in Cardiothoracic critical care preferred.
