DFCI is a world leader in cancer genomics and has made significant strategic investments in both research and clinical applications of genomics. Some of these investments include the Center for Cancer Genome Discovery (CCGD), which develops and supports new research and clinical applications of genomics methods; and the Center for Personalized Medicine (CCPM) which have recently merged to form the Center for Cancer Genomics (CCG). As a part of the next phase of strategic expansion for these programs, we are looking for an enthusiastic individual to oversee and manage the center’s research financial and administrative portfolio.
Reporting to the Department Administrator for Medical Oncology, Molecular and Cellular Oncology the Business Manager will be responsible for guiding and ensuring efficient operations of the Center for Cancer Genomics and existing collaborators. This position provides senior-level financial management and planning, operations/process improvement, and business relationship support to leadership in Cancer Genomics (Directors and Associate Directors).
We are seeking a talented individual who will proactively ensure long-term sustainable planning while coordinating agile responses to occasional short-term clinical and/or research prioritization changes, and who is adept at balancing resource allocation and prioritization across multiple goals and funding sources.
Operational Support for Strategic Planning and Implementation
Communicate with Cancer Genomics staff regarding Institute-wide strategic initiatives and policies
Oversee new program development and execution as needed
Work with external partners, sponsors and donors to ensure sustainable growth of Cancer Genomics at DFCI
Business development and financial performance
Oversee all aspects of financial and business analytics; develop and maintain key metrics and dashboard reports that will regularly inform executive and faculty leadership of facility performance
Oversees and develops financial performance objectives and ensures successful implementation
Identifies and manages initiatives to enhance cost effectiveness and cost efficiencies
Develop annual and long-term budget forecasts
Working with facility leadership, forecasts capital, operating and service center budget needs by evaluating and reporting on market conditions and financial analyses
Coordinate regular financial reports to Institute as well as leadership
Oversees ISR/Institutional commitment dollars with Director of Genomics to ensure the DFCI invests in projects associated with business plan and aligns with institute needs
Oversees and participates in managing research programs as director and maintains comprehensive knowledge of status of funding and research contractual obligations
Ensures compliant research resource utilization and communication/reporting pathways as requested
Supports the director in developing research proposals and coordinates proposal preparation with institute grants management and Research Office staff
Ability to assist in grant preparation and management; create and oversee budgets for research projects; assure that budgets meet institutional and facility policies and project goals
Monitor budgets and milestones of approved projects to help assure that projects are completed on time and within budget
Manages the effectiveness and cost control for sponsored contracts and is a member of the contract negotiating team for research projects
Assists Faculty members in finding opportunities for flagship support of the genomics initiatives with federal and non-federal dollars
Assists Faculty members in strategic planning of grant submissions throughout career and transitions
Serve as a point person with Facilities to facilitate aspects of project planning, information gathering, submissions and implementation
Assist in coordinating moves or facility use changes in support of facility director
Assists Director in planning for all space needs of the center members and faculty
Bachelor's degree required.
5+ years’ experience in clinical or research administration, project management, grants and/or financial management.
Exceptional management skills
Strong financial and business acumen, strong track record in planning, managing and monitoring complex budgets, preferably with experience managing a mixture of institutional funds as well as research grants and contracts
Works effectively in a complex organizational environment
Team player; team builder
Demonstrated ability to work effectively with faculty, executives, and staff at all levels
Displays good judgment particularly in stressful situations
Track record of creating a positive work environment, commitment to staff development and ability to retain talent
